You have to add buildmode items into the houses though, they don't just magically appear. Same with CAS items (clothing/accessories) - you have to put them onto your sims yourself for the new stuff to appear on your existing sims.
As for new townie sims from your new packs, you are going to have to go to their worlds to meet them, unless you use mods that enable sims to enter more worlds they aren't part of (like dogwalking mods/walkbys etc).
Roll the dice and hold your breath. Your save game WILL break whether you have mods or not. Your gallery will be rendered useless. 8,000 plus hours of playtime flushed down the toilet.
Every time there is a new update - that you are FORCED to download - your save file is dead. The worst pack is Growing Together and the unwanted infants and changes to chat. If your legacy save works - good for you. I guarantee you that it is broken.
You need to start a new game with every EA update. This is not funny anymore.
