Mods vs DLC - New to the game
I played Sims 3 very long ago, is Sims 4 better with mods or DLC?
Reason I ask is the DLC seem to add nothing interesting for a high price.

Also is an EA account required?

Ohhh...you're confusing mods and DLC as same or similar things?

DLC --is official content made by EA, those things cost money always, you buy from Steam if you have Steam copy of game.

Mods --are things made by fans of this game, they are for free unless you stumble upon someone's patreon. You shouldn't have to pay anything for your mods though, just use the free ones, tons of really awesome mods made by people simply trying to make a good game better.

I'll chime in once more on modding and custom content before I unsub from the discussion. Feel free to gloss over / skip my post if this is of no interest to you.

You will find yourself in a situation where, if going for CC, you'll be met with a myriad of creators suffering from delusions of grandeur, believing that they can lock their "work" behind paywalls on Patreon, more or less indefinitely.

A sizeable sum of this content isn't worth the asking price nor should paying for mods be endorsed in any way, shape or form. Pay-walls in the long-term are against EA policy, but quite a few break that policy anyway.

Whilst I don't like another route, but it is more tolerable, early access is also a thing for modders. They'll create content, whether it's script based, clothing, furniture, poses, gameplay changes etc and they'll lock it on Patreon for about two - three weeks, which enables people that really like and can't wait for their work to support them. This way, mods remain free, creators get the support if creating CC is a full-time thing for them and essentially, they're selling early access benefits which isn't an EA product, as opposed to mods themselves.

There are some creators I'd willingly donate to, either because their work is great, their attitude to modding / the community is stellar or they go above and beyond to improve the game in ways Maxis / EA either cannot do due to age restrictions, or simply do not want to / aren't capable of.

I normally go on a tip jar policy. If you keep your content open for people to enjoy and never paywall, I will likely donate. Key focus on donation. I don't like early access for modded content thus I don't support it and I am vehemently against any form of paywalling.

Good example of custom content I enjoy would be Peacemaker's stuff. Really great furniture, high quality stuff. Plenty more, but I'll let you go on your own journey of finding the CC you like if modding is something you wanna do.

Sims 4 can be incredibly shallow and boring without mods.

Some DLC is almost essential. Seasons for everyone, Parenthood if you are a family player and Get together adds a petty decent world and an incredibly versatile clubs system that can be used to create anything from an after school homework club to a lesbian vampire sex cult. Get Famous is good fun despite the lack of toilets.

If you like supernaturals Vampires has the best vampires in the franchise and the werewolves are surprisingly good, especially compared to the ones in Sims 3. Spellcasters are meh but there are mods to improve them and Aliens and mermaids are just disappointing

Mod wise you will want MCCC. what other mods depends on your play style, but I recommend Meaningful Stories, which fixes a lot of annoyances that MCCC doesn't.

Wicked Whims Extreme Violence and Basemental Drugs seem quite popular but aren't really my thing

Mod makers are not allowed to hide their content indefinitely behind a paywall beyond a certain amount of time before they must bring out a public version (usually within a month or two between mod updates), that's the way the UGC rules work. Any mod makers refusing to accept that can be reported to EA about the subject and they can take action against the mod makers for it.

Make no mistake, mod makers are not above the rules and most do try to work within the rules, even those with adult themed content and in some instances some modders back out of certain aspects of their content and they have to remove the content or try put some legacy support out for it while moving on to another aspect altogether, but there is no official support for that neglected aspect if it remains.

If you wish to donate some money to the mod makers for their efforts it should be done of your own free will and not because of some idiotic paywall where you either have to pay or move on and forget about it.

bugs may come with mod, but its free. use at own risk
bugs WILL come with dlc, its not free. fix practically comes from MOD. use at own risk


start with mods, they free anyway
when u come into a mod that required dlc, and u very interested in that mod, then only start to consider that dlc, and only buy it on sales

Lets be honest bugs come with everything, just depends on how much they affect gameplay. But yes I know what you are saying.

A decent chunk of Sims 4 DLC is either buggy or does not work as intended.

Dine Out for example is one of the biggest examples of issues galore when it comes to a DLC pack.

Given that mods are free and can be easily placed in your game, as well as taken out, it makes more sense to go the CC / Mod route as opposed to paying EA & Maxis for packs they've seemingly ignored the issues on for years.

Nothing backwards about picking something up on sale, especially any DLC in the Sims 4 realm.

I don't think you should be buying DLCs just to play mods though, but people can spend their money however they like.

One main reason I usually buy DLC to a game I really like is the DLC is bug-free and official.

Sad to hear it is not like that with this game, or happy if you like free mods. Depends on how you see it, just hope city-related DLCs work well.

Outside of some performance issues in City Living and Get Together's Windenburg, which shouldn't be happening on my rig and I believe is entirely linked to the game-engine, those DLCs for me work perfectly alright.

The ones I actively endorse are Seasons & Parenthood. Discover University is also fantastic but the Sims community weren't happy with the difficulty of it (not that hard, community just likes to dollhouse everything so any challenge doesn't exist) so I don't think we'll be seeing DLC or expansions like that again.

I'd also only recommend Discover Uni once you've got some time into the game anyway, not the sort of thing you'll be doing much of in early game or early on with households / sims.
