Linux, Bugs, Origin?
Will it change in future that Sims 4 is not available on Linux, requires Origin and that new patches come with new bugs and errors.

I have to run TS4 from my overworked older laptop with windows 10 on it just so i can play. I tried many times to get Origin to run on WINE, Lutris, PlayonLinux and others but i got nowhere with it.

I gave up trying. A Pity, it would be nice to play TS4 from my Linux machine.

you can actually install via Lutris, it will install origin and you can install sims 4 using it. It is very stable as I owned Sims 4 on origin (Twas when Origin gave it as a free game previously)

see lutris link for more proof https://lutris.net/games/the-sims-4/

Edit: added lutris link

My previous efforts with lutris were fruitless. is this something new going on?

The one reporting on Lutris has admitted that Lutris isn't 100% compatible with Origin, as the game might not launch from Origin without some adjustments. That shows there is potential it can work rather than a 100% effective method. The one reporting also hasn't stated what distro they used either.

Also don't forget:
https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/Origin.md

This shows there are other issues that are encountered when using Lutris and Origin together and there aren't any guarantees that there aren't other issues that might show up either.

So nothing new. I was hoping for some more progress on the emulation side to make Origin more compatible.

Okay, I might try TS3 on Lutris because I already own it. But buying sth that is not and proberbly won't be native on Linux and also is buggy is just a no go for me.

Getting The Sims 4 to work on Linux isn't the difficult part. With a proper Wine prefix (using the right libraries like Vulkan DirectX) it works just fine. Getting Origin to work is another story. It's possible, I played The Sims 4 and Dragon Age Inquisition on Linux without issues. But it takes some work. I would have to recheck what the current state is. In the past you needed to use Origin Legacy and throw a older version over it after which you make the files read-only to prevent updates. But I think last I checked the new Origin was fine. It's been a while since I played Origin games on Linux tho. Also, back then there was only the Origin version. I suspect the steam version won't be too different, perhaps even easier with Proton, but I can't guarantee.

Anyways, as for Linux I can confirm it's possible to get it to work smoothly and without bugs, but Origin is difficult (but needed and possible). It won't ever not require Origin as it's used for verification much like Ubisoft still needing it's own launcher for that, and it very likely will never get a native version since there isn't even a native Origin client and Linux gamers are already a small group, with most showing in statistics as Windows gamers due to using WINE. It's not considered lucrative enough to most to put in the effort of supporting it.

Sims 4 and Origin work out-of-the-box with Steam Proton...

i am aware of a proton update yesterday. i was wondering if it did any good.

If you have problem with Origin, then might be that you need additional dependencies..

Additional system dependencies required for Origin installation:

  • Arch: lib32-gnutls lib32-libldap lib32-libgpg-error lib32-libxml2 lib32-alsa-plugins lib32-sdl2 lib32-freetype2 lib32-dbus lib32-libgcrypt libgcrypt

  • Ubuntu: libgnutls30:i386 libldap-2.4-2:i386 libgpg-error0:i386 libxml2:i386 libasound2-plugins:i386 libsdl2-2.0-0:i386 libfreetype6:i386 libdbus-1-3:i386

  • Fedora: gnutls.i686 openldap.i686 libgpg-error.i686 libxml2.i686 alsa-plugins-*.i686 SDL2.i686 freetype.i686 dbus-libs.i686 libgcrypt.i686 libgcrypt.x86_64

And this works perfectly with Origin Thin client what is on Steam with Steam Proton.
(tested on Proton 5.0.9 and 5.13)

Running Sims 4 via Steam and Proton has been working well for me on Ubuntu 20.10. Sometimes it takes Origin a few tries to figure it out, especially if there's an Origin update that needs to be handled.

I thought I wouldn't ever be able to leave Windows, that I would have to come back for things like the Sims. It's been pretty glorious. :D

I couldn't get origin to work in wine no matter what I tried. Found this thread, and activated the experimental play in steam on Linux, and it worked. It still took three tries launching Sims 4 before Origin cooperated, but each time it got further in the process until the game finally launched.

I'm obliged to necro this one, sorry.

Can you share your setup?

For me, only Proton Experimental works nowadays. But Origin itself hogs the resources and causes stuttering + cursor flickering.

Linux Mint x64 with 5.8.0-45 kernel. GTX960 with latest propietary drivers, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz, 16GB RAM - the friggin' thing should fly! - but it isn't, not even remotely.

EGS Launcher, installed in same fashion, works perfectly somehow. :bandit:

(P. S. both WineHQ and Lutris failed me: Origin hogs so many resources with these so even simplest games are barely playable. And Thin client fails to work there properly)

Easy fix for stuttering (when Origin is a problem)

You need to find the compatdata data folder and then the folder inside for The Sims 4, and then you need to change the permissions on it as Origin likes to constantly try to write into it.

This is what you need to do when The Sims 4 is installed in standard way (you did not change default install directory):
  1. Open terminal
  2. Simply put this command in terminal:
    chmod -R -w ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1222670/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Application\ Data/Origin
  3. Hit Enter and it's done.

That will remove the ability for Origin to write into it as a quick fix.
You will need to enable it again (+w instead of -w) if Origin ever needs updates, and then do it again to stop the stuttering.
