I gave up trying. A Pity, it would be nice to play TS4 from my Linux machine.
see lutris link for more proof https://lutris.net/games/the-sims-4/
Edit: added lutris link
Edit:
The one reporting on Lutris has admitted that Lutris isn't 100% compatible with Origin, as the game might not launch from Origin without some adjustments. That shows there is potential it can work rather than a 100% effective method. The one reporting also hasn't stated what distro they used either.
Also don't forget:
https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/Origin.md
This shows there are other issues that are encountered when using Lutris and Origin together and there aren't any guarantees that there aren't other issues that might show up either.
So nothing new. I was hoping for some more progress on the emulation side to make Origin more compatible.
Anyways, as for Linux I can confirm it's possible to get it to work smoothly and without bugs, but Origin is difficult (but needed and possible). It won't ever not require Origin as it's used for verification much like Ubisoft still needing it's own launcher for that, and it very likely will never get a native version since there isn't even a native Origin client and Linux gamers are already a small group, with most showing in statistics as Windows gamers due to using WINE. It's not considered lucrative enough to most to put in the effort of supporting it.
Additional system dependencies required for Origin installation:
And this works perfectly with Origin Thin client what is on Steam with Steam Proton.
(tested on Proton 5.0.9 and 5.13)
I thought I wouldn't ever be able to leave Windows, that I would have to come back for things like the Sims. It's been pretty glorious. :D
>Running Sims 4 via Steam and Proton has been working well for me on Ubuntu 20.10.
>Sometimes it takes Origin a few tries to figure it out, especially if there's an Origin update that needs to be handled.
>Found this thread, and activated the experimental play in steam on Linux, and it worked. It still took three tries launching Sims 4 before Origin cooperated, but each time it got further in the process until the game finally launched.
>Sims 4 and Origin work out-of-the-box with Steam Proton...
Can you share your setup?

For me, only Proton Experimental works nowadays. But Origin itself hogs the resources and causes stuttering + cursor flickering.
Linux Mint x64 with 5.8.0-45 kernel. GTX960 with latest propietary drivers, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz, 16GB RAM - the friggin' thing should fly! - but it isn't, not even remotely.
EGS Launcher, installed in same fashion, works perfectly somehow.
(P. S. both WineHQ and Lutris failed me: Origin hogs so many resources with these so even simplest games are barely playable. And Thin client fails to work there properly)
You need to find the compatdata data folder and then the folder inside for The Sims 4, and then you need to change the permissions on it as Origin likes to constantly try to write into it.
This is what you need to do when The Sims 4 is installed in standard way (you did not change default install directory):
That will remove the ability for Origin to write into it as a quick fix.
You will need to enable it again (+w instead of -w) if Origin ever needs updates, and then do it again to stop the stuttering.
