Let me give a short explanation.
Mass Effect series - popular - successful overall. Gameplay wise? Poop - simple, hence fun - but poop. But story? ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥... overhyped. The plot itself is not amazing - I would dare say, Necromunda is 10 times better with more nuances (hah... that's a joke, but really, it is better).
The reason why Mass Effect is considered so good with the story is not The story - it's how it's portrayed. In Mass Effect you have very well made dialogues that are not too long, but also precise, not to mention - down to earth. No theatrical way of speech that is common for both fantasy and sci-fi - with long ass "explanations". No - ME told the whole long ass story through short dialogues throughout the game.
Now this game simply fails at two things: long ass unnecessary explanations that are long and vague, and what ME also gave players: choice. Stories in games are always so much better when you actually feel like the character - in Necromunda the main character is... I like him (since I've played male, dunno if females have female voices - would be weird, right?) but honestly I doubt many people also do. No real presence other than few gruff sentences here and there.
I really don't understand why people like to make points out of whether or not a plot is good (overall, as is the case in most cases) - if you strip majority of stories considered good, down to what happens - you won't get really far. I mean, Necromunda had what: friends that die, betrayal, vengeance, a mysterious figure, yadda yadda - but at the end you meet some Big Shot. It's not the story - it's how that Big Boss, i.e. Silver Talon was portrayed - out of nowhere Jericho comes, speaks little despite it being a very good moment to shed some light onto the whole matter, not just 3 reasons why, and Silver Talon basically screams that she's an unloved child and goes fighting.
Not to mention, good moment to tell players something about what might happened, to make them want to see more. Personally I don't mind short stories that end abruptly, but I believe I speak for a very small group of people here. Still, loved the game - one of the best FPS games as far as the gameplay goes I've ever played - the only issues are basically down to "endgame" and how little you really get from drops. Not a huge fan of H'n'S millions of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ items, but I think it'd give a far better incentive to invest time into this game.
I'm glad someone else brought this up. I had to limit the bionics I bought to keep my suspension of disbelief, because otherwise I'd feel like a broken edgelord dark heresy character that some idiot GM lets have techpriest stuff without the prerequisites, and who ignores grapnel movement rules and throws around high-level gear for just about everyone.
And I agree with the story stuff, especially given things like that Brickjaw guy; what's the point of letting him live, getting captured, blah blah fake choices that all lead to the same place. All the leadup to keep ending up in the same situation, time and time again. Oh this mission is over now, fade to black and cut to the settlement. Meaningless word salad to pad out killing another hundred mooks who all shout the same thing. The things I do to satisfy my inner dork.
sorry haven't bothered with that one.
i just enjoyed the looks and feels of the maps, and that made up for the lack of story...
i srsly had no idea what happened why and when...
maybe i'll have a look for that when i play it a second time
