Don't be fooled by the begining, it's a roguelike with many unlocks(classes) and permanent upgrades.
First of all, you need to get adequate team. You can't just recruit someone anytime you need helping hands, it's quite rare opportunity. Second, you can freely chose class for the first two starter mercs. If you need a field doctor in you team but didn't pick this job from very beginning, well, good luck to find one in the future.
Third, everything have rarity rank like in Diablo games. Everything. Weapon, armor, trinkets, even mercenaries themselves. Rare items straight up better than common items. Rare Merc got about 20 statpoints more than common Merc.
Fourth. Rarity cannot guarantee that loot will be useful. For example, you can find awesome orange shotgun with pretty impressive damage... but some nasty prefix, like -5 armor or -5 constitution. That item will go straight to the garbage bin.
Fifth. You can run into enemy party consisted from four elite mercs. You can't sneak past then, you can't beat them, you can't bribe them. End of the road. And it will be very painful if you loose in the fight even once, because they're just not enough resources to survive.
1) Select you characters
2) Make some progress. Die from rookie mistake
3) Restart. Spend your upgrade points.
4) Make some more progress, die from mistake
5) Restart. Spend your upgrade points
6) Make even further, die from random encounter with elites
7) Restart. Spend your upgrade points
8) Now you characters got better stats than everyone else in starting locations
9) Make it to the first boss. Die because it has more stat points than you
10) Restart. Spend your upgrade points
11) Progress. First boss. Die. Restart. First boss. Die. Restart...
43) Now you're elite too and you got nice starting gear too.
44) Make stable progress. Die from the hands of second boss.
45) Rinse and repeat.
Its very important to pass most skill checks and get materials early to upgrade your base. You also need to avoid injuries or have a lot of healing supplies, probably new players shpuld play with a surgeon or doctor.
You need to carefully read the class of weapons and armor every class can equip, yoy cant put anyone in any position.
Carefully plan your route, if you fall behind the enemies it might be good to take a higher risk mission( for example 4 skulls and 1 coin) to level up and then do 2-3 skulls and 3-4 coins.
In the hard encounters you have to manually play to have a better chance of winning.
You shouldnt start on hard:p
Players will probably fail 2-3 runs and then win the game.
Its a very complex game where all the little choices matter since they snowball later in the game.
The bosses are hard to kill but you can also delay doing them until you get better tacrics, gear and level.
The game can work with the classic trio of tank/dps/healer but there are many combinations that are great, experimenting is recommanded. There are many hybrid classes as well
