You could also find a potent 19 gor a 1.8% of potentiflating it into a perfect but thats a little boring since you gotta redo the 1000 steps each time
I have to agree with your sentiment here. The devs should have tuned to difficulty settings differently with something for a standard solo PvE experience, a hardcore PvE experience and then a different config for PvP eligibility. That way they could have adjusted the "drop rates" for higher potential to be more inline with the expected playtime without needing the player to constantly use the Potent potions for any reasonable chances.
To be fair, having made a lot of playthroughs, potential really does not matter at all. It only speeds up the rate at which you get potential points in PVE, and does not matter in PVP because every coromon get the same ammount of point regardless of potential. I still stand by the point that its fairly easy to find perfect Coromons in the game
Is there anything besides +3x amount of long run stat points getting perfects or even potents gives you (in game rewards, etc)? After looking at the Wiki I think I'm fine settling on 15-16 potential.
But then again that 2.9% chance of getting something better is too tempting to pass up.
I use a Potent Scent, run away!!! dont fight way slower - about x10 fights and if I haven't gotten the 20 or 21 I am farming, I reload and go ten more encounters. If I get a 20 from another mon I cap and save, thusly only loosing a little timer inbetween caps. If anything I waste some of a potent and get about 5 20s out of a sesh.
So far here is a logged example:
(about halfway through the grind I started keeping track I was annoyed - S is seraphace, O otogi, D the d mon in the area and X was the ice moth farming in Pawburry temple - Numbers are loading the game. At a ceartian point I stopped writing down the mobs that werent X's)
Encounters:

All the X's are encounters with the base mon, P18X's are potents that weren't 20+.
I spent a few hours just getting this one mon, and it was a 20 when I finaly got it.
I have had 3 natural 21s spawn up during my grinding sessions, plus about ten+ P20's from various other mons during my grinding for specfic ones that are 21able.
I agree with Doctor T gaming, I mostly go for perfects on mons I really like but it's not necessary. I do it to myself its true! hahah regardless, enjoying the game a lot.
Span rate seems fine, just gotta double down on dringing the mons you want and can be a bit daunting when you don't get it! I am working on the Shimshell next, he won't stop rolling 18's - wish me luck.
