When is the potentiflator value determined?

Is the value of potential added to the coromon determined when putting it into the potentiflator of when removing it?
I've been having really bad luck with potent scent. Got a couple with 19 potential though, and as far as my understanding goes the chance of a 19 getting an extra level to become perfect is about 2%.
I'm not doing the running back and forth 50 times, but I'm willing to reload a save multiple times, but I'd like to know if anyone has done testing on this and can tell me if the outcome can change when reloading a save from either right before getting the coromon back, or right before you complete the required amount of steps.
Ir is it truly determined from the moment you put it into the machine?

If you want to reroll the result of the potentiflator you have to save before you give the 'mon to the NPC as far as I know.

Admittedly I've never tested it myself, but it should be easy enough to test using a coromon who's result doesn't matter if you want to verify it yourself.

I'm not sure where you've been using to farm your steps, but I find that the strip of beach right outside the trainer hub on Donar Island is a great spot for it. It's a nice long strip of land with no encounters and no obstacles. I found that I was able to get all the steps I needed in only a few minutes.

I actually tested it last summer 'cause I was curious (don't think there was a change in that the last months after this) and I'm 99% sure you have to save before giving the Mon to the NPC. I tested it for the Potentiflator with over 300 tries for one mon, still it could be very unlucky; but I also tested with the change of the trait - and it was always the same trait with saving just before getting the Mon back over 30 times and changed without resetting the save (and I would expect the system to work the same).

I just have run in the house itself in the lower area from left to right and back and watched videos on YouTube in the time, and I can understand, when someone don't like to do that. :D (a friend of mine actually wrote herself a script for the needed inputs so her char runs automatically and she just have to speak with the NPC after a certain amount of time, because she also was not willing to be as masochistic as I have been^^)
