We need to somehow shake the idea every monster tamer game is a pokemon clone so the devs know there is a huge market here that is pretty starved.
Like you said, there is much money to be made here.
Pretty much like this guy is saying:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AcxjfF-FmA
When they think of monster taming games, they intentionally go the Pokemon route because they usually are Pokemon fans and want to do Pokemon-like games because they feel Gamefreak and the Pokemon Company have missed opportunity with the series.
There is nothing wrong with the 2D medium for games. YOU dislike it. And you have every right to your opinion. But your opinion is not a fact. Yes Coromon is using the classic recipe that made monster capture games popular. They've striven to keep the aspects people liked and trying to improve upon aspects people didn't like.
It's not a clone or a rip-off. It is inspired by and an attempt to improve.
This game does more than the old pokemon games and actually breathes some life into the genre that's been lost in the Pokemon franchise.
Also the sprite art is a million times better than 3D models.
Inversely, some people here believe the monster taming genre means "plays exactly like pokemon". And that statement reads "tell me you've only ever played pokemon inspired monster taming games without telling me you've only ever played pokemon inspired monster taming games". Like Digimon games are wildly different from Pokemon ones. Even Digimon World 3, the closest thing to Pokemon is still wildly different. I'm not even going into games like Monster Rancher, Slime Rancher, and Viva Pinata. Which are also a part of the genre.
