GTA2 runs so slowly

Hi,
I am launching GTA2 on low-mid notebook from 2007. There's nothing to tell about requirements - I can play all other GTA games up to San Andreas with decent FPS (even old non-DirectX GTA works fine). GTA2 causes my notebook to overheat (so it drains 100% CPU) [sic!] and has very serious slowdown after overheat. There's some compatibility issue or something else, I have no idea what. When I search for some solutions, Google returns results about GTA4 performance -_-. So I'm stuck. Any ideas?

some old games don't work well on new computers, as well, some games dont work on notebook because, maybe you cam trya a compability setting like win xp sp3 or sp2 or win 2000

I tried that. Doesn't help. I didn't mention probable issue. My notebook has serious overheating problems. Its temperature goes quickly up when on pressure and when it reaches 70-80 degrees, my cpu slows down from 1600Mhz to 800MHz on each core. I remember some games having issues with that because they didn't expect cpu frequency variability. I just hope somebody knows about some patch or setting in configuration file (if any present) which will help. I wouldn't start whole topic if first GTA wouldn't work smoothly. GTA 2 afaik is written for DirectX and if I had any problems with old games performance, they were from pre-DirectX era. So I would expect GTA 1 to have low FPS more than any later GTA up to San Andreas.

It's not likely to be the GAME persay that overheats you, it's likely to be the emulator used to run the game (emulators simulate the Operating System the program was made for, this is likely to be a DOS or '95 emulator) I'm afraid the only thing you can do is upgrade.

And regarding your claim that google only shows you gta4 reusults, this was my top result for "GTA 2 windows 7 slow" http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=416480

Try turning off frame limiter, it worked for me.

@Joobleblob: You just had better luck with typing a good query. Steam GTA2 just doesn't have any registry keys.
@EliteSausage: I tried frame limiter before. Unfortunately it doesn't work.

Thank you all for answers. I think I'll just play it on my stationary PC. Joobleblob is probably right about emulator requirements.

I have a windows 8 system, and GTA2 runs slow, try it, it works with me:

Run regedit -> go to the link below -> change the value of min_frame_rate value to 1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\DMA Design Ltd\GTA2\screen\

Thanks for advice. Unfortuantely can't test it now - got new notebook some time ago ;) But since it's hard not to get Win8 nowadays, someone will have use of it :)

Some time ago I'd fully support your opinion, but that was 5 year old notebook which was not a good choice even in 2007. Now times have changed. My new notebook which was meant to be cheap second choice for some weekend outings has proven to be faster than my stationary PC, which maybe is not the newest, but still pretty powerful one ;)

I just download GTA 2 and had the same problem- it was extremely slow. I change resolution to maximum, but it was a mistake. When I try it on lowest possible resolution (640x480) it start working perfectly :) I know this topic has more than a year already, but if someone will look for a solution- here it is ;p

Thanks, Shalazz. Setting the resolution to 640x480 fixed this issue for me.
