Trash -- No Wonder They Don't Charge for GTA1
Windows 10 can not run this game whatsoever. Was not able to find a proper resolution for this game to fix the flickering, and after the second time I launched it I can't even get past the title screen without the game crashing.

I do not have a powerful PC so I was hoping to at least be able to play a nearly twenty year old game without issues, but here we are. Why bother letting users download retro games for modern OSes if they don't work? GoG does this much, much better.

The game runs fine even on windows 10.

Because GoG is a business, it's what they do. They modify old games and sell them as working products. ^_^
This was never on sale. So the users that can has to fiddle with it to get it to work. Such is the price of freeware things. :)

I just bought it as part of a bundle of GTA game so while the price for this game is negligable I have ultimately paid for it so kind of expect it to be in a suitably appropriate state to be playable, and as it is not then it shouldn't be in the bundle.

You have a weak system, yet you run windows 10. First mistake. You assume an ancient game will run on modern windows without any tweaking. Second mistake. You called a head-turning game-changer a piece of trash without any idea what your talking about. Third mistake.

Your out. Uninstall and find a new hobby.

Hey now, let's relax a minute. I called it was trashed because of the way it's packaged (as an unplayable mess, others in this thread agree) and not because I thought the game itself was of sub-par quality. I wouldn't know, to be honest with you...because I haven't found a way to run it on my rig yet.

Fair enough, what have you tried so far? I'm googling it now and it seems some people have had some luck.

A few things that people claimed worked: Source - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDhMqsVMBvc
Run as admin
Compatibility mode
Lowering desktop resolution
DOS Emulator

Then once you get it working, if you want it to run at a proper widescreen setup ->
https://thirteenag.github.io/wfp

Download the GTA1 full package, it's free and legal. This one also includes the London expansions. The full package comes with the widescreen fix pre-applied. To get it to work in game press F11 and choose a 32-bit resolution.

Most likely if you do that you will need to re-apply whatever settings got it to launch in W10.
Good luck to you.

Last edit -> Oh forgot to mention, they don't charge for it because they legally can't. Rockstar declared GTA1/2 abandonware, meaning it's free for everyone but it also means they won't update it again. Though nothing is stopping people from finding fixes and updates themselves.
