I do also think it's worth noting though that the previous two games were developed by Ubisoft whereas this new game was developed by THQ so they may have wanted to take it in a slightly different direction.
It's not the incomprehensible. How many other games ran off on random tangent.
Saints Row 4 -> Gat out of Hell -> What ever areas shooter name was -> Saint row last year
Payday 2 - Pay day 3
Plants vs Zombies -> Plants vs Zombies 2
Metal gear -> Metal gear solid -> Metal Gear Survive
1- They were burnt out from the previous two, which were massive undertakings with massive scripts, since it's on Matt & Trey to do much of the writing and voices.
2- they got a bit bored with the old formula and wanted to try something new
3- Trey loves RPGs but Matt likes more simple action games, so this was more Matt's project
4- Matt has implied (but not explicitly stated) that it was an experiment to see whether it would work and was worth pursuing further.
Those are all verifiable justifications Matt & Trey have mentioned.
There could also be other reasons happening behind the scenes which they would never admit publicly. Such as: the game was a disposable "filler" made to meet their contract obligations. They signed a hefty $900M deal with ViacomCBS in 2021 for 14 new "movies" (which turned out to be just 45 min episodes), more "seasons" till 2027 (which are an anemic 6 episodes each compared to 10 episodes each before the deal), a 3D game, and more. This is of course, purely speculation but considering the way they sort of phoned in the specials and regular episodes, it doesn't seem too crazy to suggest they're doing the bare minimum to complete the contract. Hundreds of music bands and artists have done the same by cranking out half-assed albums just to get through a contract with a company they came to hate.
If that's true, expect future South Park projects to be bad as well. At least until this contract is done.
The Fractured But Whole was developed by Ubisoft San Francisco.
Snow Day! was developed by Question LLC.
I absolutely agree.
But considering how strongly Matt felt about it in his recent vids, how he doesn't like RPGs much, how they both were so burnt out, etc, I wouldn't want them to just slog through a new project they're tired of and miserable doing, just for us fans.
I'd be open minded to try something new like a different genre, if it looked and felt like the show (Snow Day doesn't), if they were both into it (this time it was clear Trey wasn't), and most importantly - if it was really high quality to match or exceed Stick & Fractured.
Not sure I know what that would look like, exactly. Maybe some hybrid of Snow Day & Fractured? Maybe a shorter open world 3D action adventure with strong narrative, and both single player & multiplayer elements? Perhaps in The Panderverse?
Hopefully SP4 goes back to 2D. Otherwise it will be the next skip.
If we take a look at the progression of seasons of South Park:
Season 2: 18 episodes
Season 7: 15 episodes
Season 16: 14 episodes
Season 23: 10 episodes
In each case, no season that came after had that many episodes again. Honestly, it really seems like they are just burnt out and tired of doing South Park.
The first thing they did with that money wasn't a big amazing South Park project like a huge game. It was to renovate La Casa Bonita, while doing the least number of South Park episodes in any season they did before.
I think you have a good point about the money. As soon as I read that number, I thought it was obscene. Money has a habit of making talented geniuses fat and lazy. How many musicians, comedians, and actors vanished as soon as they got their big payday, and stopped doing what made them famous?

I was going to say, just not wanting to make the same thing over and over.
If they did, they'd get bored making them, and we'd get bored playing them.
You could always try Chef's Love Shack......
But really, when you look at all the South Park games, only those 3 of them looked like the show that I can think of. The others were all 3D. Which I don't mind, it's how the game is that I mind.
