I love this game, i've been playing it on and off for the last few days and i'm almost at the end. That said, some of the levels have odd difficulty spikes and sometimes break the usual "rules" of the game.
I remember trying Manhunt 1 about half a year ago, wanting to see what all the fuss was about.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover it was a solid stealth game with great atmosphere. You're right about the difficulty spikes though, but I still enjoyed it all the way through. Hope you enjoy the rest of the game.
Just finished it, tough but fun. I'm going to try and get better scores on 2 levels to unlock more bonus stuff. Just played one of the extra levels, actually finished it first try. :P
To be fair though, I played this when it first came out years ago, which made it easier.
Stand near a shadowed area and punch the wall (or hit it with a weapon etc) and then hide in the shadows. If they're not close enough, find a closer shadow area and try again. Guy will investigate, when he turns yellow and turns around and walks away kill him. Hit the wall again, hide in shadows, next guy finds body, eventually turn yellow and turns around..... Rinse, repeat.
Once you get to where it's just instinct you can have more fun with it and get more aggressive. But using the method above will work 99% of the time. If they're in groups use thrown cans/bricks etc since they have a smaller noise radius, easier to single out baddies.
I'm glad you enjoyed it :) The bonus levels can be a bit tougher (esp. the monkey one).
What Banzai said is good advice. Just take things slow and plan ahead.
Same method, you just shoot them from shadows instead of stabbing them. Wait until they get right up close to you to investigate a noise and shoot them in the face. Never use guns in this game if you can't get a reliable headshot. Body shots are sketchy as hell, headshots are reliable one shot kills. I was crap with the guns for the first couple hours but you get used to it pretty quick. Prioritize pistols/rifles over shotguns, and *always* try to keep a melee weapon in one slot for silent kills. There are a few missions later on where you can be without a melee weapon for quite a while if you're not careful to keep one handy. Guns are deadly, but they attract too much attention at the beginning of a level where there's lots of enemies still alive.
The funny thing is: guns are so damn easy to use in Manhunt 2. They auto lock onto the heads of NPCs allowing for instakills. Compared to it, I enjoyed Manhunt's gunplay much more.
I actually do enjoy the guns in the first game, they just require some practise to use effectively. Later in the game when you get comfortable with them you can take on groups of enemies pretty easily as long as you can pull off the headshots. I like the contrast, at the beginning you're stealthy and running away a lot. Near the end I was often running directly at them guns blazing and still making it out alive. Rifles are also great for those long distance kills, it's almost too easy.
Agreed.
I feel this is where Manhunt 2 failed. It's an okay game but it suffers due to the easy combat and most of the levels being shoot-them-up sections rather than building up towards that. Even then, those gun-heavy levels in Manhunt 2 should've still allowed for stealth like they did in Manhunt 1.
