[SOLVED] GTA:SA mouse not working on Windows 10
To put this simply: the mouse doesn't work and every solution Google provided me didn't help.

So first of all, is it even possible to make the mouse function properly on Windows 10?

What I have tried to fix my problem:
- Install dinput8.dll
- Run as administrator
- Run in compatibility mode for all possible Windows versions
- Set affinity via task manager to using only one processor (most success so far)
- Disable visual themes via advanced system visual settings menu
- Disable desktop version via advanced system visual settings menu
- Any combination of the above (including all of them together)

It seems like I can make the mouse work for the first screen displayed in the game and once that screen changes (for example by pressing "Resume game" it stop working again.
Most times I start the game, I can click to skip the Rockstar logo spraying and the intro video, however once the menu appears I can only move the mouse and not click.
I can then set the affinity to only use one processor which works temporarily, but then once I start the game (either via load game or new game) the mouse stops working again.
I cannot make the mouse work in-game via this method because if I alt-tab the menu appears in which I have to click the resume game to start playing again, after which the mouse stops working again: no clicking or moving it (looking around).

As far as I can tell, the game shows no other problems: saving, starting missions, cutscenes, starting the game ... all work fine (all tested without a mouse).

I have the regular Steam version of the game and haven't made any changes to the files except installing the dinput8.dll file which can easily be removed.
If my specs are required: I have no clue where I can find them, but if you could tell me where, I have no problem giving them.

Thank you in advance!

What worked perfectly?

Both give the same solution, only via different links.

I do recommend downgrading to the 1.0 version of the game because the SilentPatch is glitchy on the regular Steam version.

Good luck!

Thanks, EMMA, yea, I'm gonna go v 1.0, Silent's patch and fixed cars patch, then I'll need a controller emulator to get my ancient joystick to work with the game.
I'm just wondering what effect all this will have on STEAM's "validate files" use?

awesome...glad to hear :)

I downgraded to v 1.0, installed Silent's patch/mod, vehicle fix. Saves gone, redefine keymapping OK but start new game gets Critical Exception so, no game. Game folder has two gta_sa,exe's. So now the game's completely broken.
"18 files failed to validate and will be reacquired".

I followed this thread to do everything I did:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/12120/discussions/0/34096318964479523/

First of all I deleted and redownloaded the game from Steam (to "reset" its settings). I also deleted the "GTA San Andreas User Files" before redownloading (you might want to back-up your save files before deleting).

Then I used this link to downgrade. This does create an extra gta_sa.exe file, but I just left that where it was:

Then I downloaded and installed the "ASI Loader 1.3" from this link:

http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=21709

Lastly I downloaded and installed the "SilentPatchSA 1.1 Build 24" from this link:

http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=25368

I did not download/install the vehicle patch, which is as far as I can tell entirely visual (correct me if I'm wrong).

All links I used can also be found on the mentioned thread.

I hope this helps you out!

Actually, it's pretty simple. Every time I start up a save the mouse doesn't work. So, I went in to the steam overlay to look at a guide, went back out, and it was good! Dunno what happened, but it worked

I'd really hoped to downgrade to v 1.0 for years to get the full "hot coffee" dating, but "GTASA_12-9-14_Steam_to_V1_DG.exe" crashes the game. I've tried it twice with the same result.

Tks man

Another trick: tweak any of GTA's mouse settings (sensitivity, inversion, etc), and when you go back into the game the mouse will work. Fortunately you can get through the intro mission without any mouse use. (just) :)

FYI: Mine is a clean (steam) install of GTA on a clean install of Win10.

Update: Autism's trick of opening the Steam overlay then closing it again works too, as does alt+tab-ing out of the game, then back into it.

That said, I've had virtually no problems with the mouse now, after another two or three days of play. {shrugs} Does the problem kinda go away, or did an update happen?

Go into steam overlay (Alt+tab) and then back to game.
Works great for me.
