Is the flight school optional?
Is it to the main story? Or is it just optional? Is it really so hard? Is it possible with keyboard+mouse?

You need to complete it at least in bronze to continue the plot. Yes, it is possible with keyboard and mouse.

It's necessary to unlock future missions.

If you're having trouble with any missions, turn on the in-game frame limiter.

PC KM/B isn't that bad.

Flight school is mandatory for story progression reasons. As others stated you need a minimum of bronze medals in all tests to get the pilot license and continue the storyline
