SAMP with friends?

Hi guys I just wanted to know if a friend joins the same SAMP (San Andrea's multiplayer) or MTA (multi theft auto) server as me, will we be playing together? Because I want to encourage my friends to get GTA SA Multiplayer but it would suck if we just flat out couldn't play together. Thanks
