GTA vice city wont start?!?! help

Hi i just purchased gta vice city with the trilogy pack. And eveytime i went to launch the game at the shortcut or in steam... nothing happens at all not even a preparing to launch. I can play the testapp fine. But i would like to play it with steam. any help would be appreciated.

God this is infuriating. Like most others in this thread, I have set the DPP (or whatever) exception and that didnt work. I went to the GTA Vice City User Files folder to delete that one file only to find it empty. I have tried all of the different compatibility modes from both the .exe and the steam launcher to no success. I am running Windows 7 64-bit, and i have managed to get even older games to play on my pc (Baldur's Gate comes to mind), and this is the first time that I cant figure out how to get this working.

My issue: after clicking the launcher the screen goes black and then it shows partially my desktop and black screen in a low resolution. Every time.

I don't get how some of you have had no problems playing it. I feel ripped off.

I have the exact same problem as 'placeboblack', I've tried everything that's been suggested and more, I think it's a problem with Windows 7 64-bit.

I have Win7 Pro x64, one LCD 1280*1024, Radeon HD 5570.
And it runs well on 'testapp.exe'.

Fagear, how are you launching the game? I tried renaming it to the .exe filename and it still wouldn't start for me.

*UPDATE*

I got it to work! Or at least into the main menu screen. Forget about all the compatibility mode crap that everyone says to do if you are experiencing the black/partial desktop error. All I did was hit a key on my keyboard/move around my 360 controller (ps3 controller with 360 drivers via DS3 Tool) and the main screen came up. For whatever reason the game appears to be hanging on the desktop but is actually running in the background waiting for your input.

I honestly hope this helps some of you guys out.

Managed to get it working, turns out the problem was using the HDMI output on my graphics card. I changed to VGA and it works perfectly. So if anyone is using HDMI, my advice is switch to VGA

No dice for me - I always get "Grand Theft Auto VC cannot find enough available video memory" no matter what I try :(

I get the same error for VC and GTA 3. Win7 64 bit, EVGA GTA 680, and it's in my VGA port. I'm also running on a 32" LED 16X9 tv monitor.

I have the same problem, I can't start GTA III and VC. I've tried all the things you guys said, still no luck... :( I have Windows 8 Pro x64.

Mine would start then freeze at the text to the intro movie.... Make sure your frame limiter under settings is ON. fixed mine. Also from past problems when the game loads don't skip any of the intro credits- let it play through the entire beginning till you are dropped out of the car in-game then go to the hotel and save. From their load your game and freezing should be no problem. Good luck ;)

One of them is for mac installs the other is for windows. If you can't load the game then you need to install the other version for it to work.

im not changing the resolution on my graphics card. i find it hard to believe that steam would have these on sale if there wasn't a way to run them on windows 8

I'm on WIndows 7, and to get it to work I had to run the game via the testapp.exe file instead of gta-vc.exe. To do this, view the local files (where vice city is installed), rename 'gta-vc.exe' to something else, I renamed mine '1gta-vc'. Then rename the testapp.exe file to 'gta-vc'. This might work with Windows 8 as well, so give it a try.

When I go to play it, it goes straight to steam store, I'm on windows 7. Please help. It says I have it on the webpage but on the launcher it says I just have TF2
