Vice City takes place in the '80s, much before the events of GTA 3 (I suppose; I haven't played it).

The stories have no relations to each other.

I'm sure you'll find interest based on the generations, like as Nur said above, Vice City takes place in the 80s and GTA 3 takes place in 2001 I think.

There's some recurrent characters in both games, but it goes nowhere more than that. Playing GTA3 then Vice City, you'll learn how some of them started and what happened to them at some point, that's all. Still, I'd play GTA 3 before Vice City if I had choice, Vice City introduced many cool things that may affect your judgment on how great GTA3 is actually.

GTA 3 is frustrating as hell but I played through it recently and still recommend it, but only using saves to skip some of the most frustrating missions. Some missions are still good, but both the driving and shooting aren't great - nor were they in 2001, it was the total package that was great back then.

However, GTA3 and GTA San Andreas have an awesome story connection, you get the effect of a prequel origin story in San Andreas for GTA 3. Without giving spoilers it adds a lot to both games.

Is GTA3 noticeably worse than Vice City in terms of gameplay? I played Vice City for the first time only two weeks ago and San Andreas a year ago and enjoyed them both. Sure, they had dated and clunky gameplay mechanics (most of all I despised all the flying segments), but the games were still really enjoyable overall. So I've been naturally tempted to get GTA3 as well, as it looks quite similar. But is it really that bad in comparison?

GTA3 pretty much plays the same as Vice City honestly, San Andreas was quite an improvement on many gameplay aspects, especially about camera control, movement and obviously the ability to swim, but if you enjoyed Vice City and were able to pass on its flaws, you should not be worried about GTA3.

What may be frustrating is the very urban design and lack of environment changes, no bikes and helicopters is something else but there's no real needs 'cause the city is well designed for car driving.

The difficult is either the same or just a bit above Vice City at some points.

Overall, San Andreas was made much easier and polished on many aspects, but GTA3 and Vice City are very similar on many aspects.

Go for it.

No, what's frustrating is that there's no map, and there are no store icons on the radar. If you wanna go to a gun store or a pay n' spray, you have to VISUALLY remember where they are.

And again, no map. If you played the "Espresso to Go" mission in GTA 3, You would've experienced hell.

Ok, thanks for the details. It doesn't sound too bad, so it's probably safe to get it when it's on one of those 3€ sales. I'm willing to tolerate some bad/dated gameplay mechanics so long as I get to drive around, exploring the city.

Sorry I did not see your answer before. I had to boot up the game to check that 'cause I didn't remembered that point (curiously), and you're right. It really is something I don't remember having problem with, perhaps because I know the map pretty well right now but it's true it can be problematic.

Some kind of workaround, I recommend playing the game with a paint editor and the original map in huge format in background, you'll be able to check the map if needed but also, if you're like me, you'll be able to track your progress by adding each unique stunt / package / rampage found during your gameplay. If you're going for 100% or anything without cheating, it really helps to see in what places you never really checked or found anything. It's not optimal and quite old-school but I always played like that for all GTA games :>

If you got some steam keys from bundle or anything else, I have a spare GTA 3 one. Grabbed it during Rockstar Bundle sale but I already had it previously.
