Doesn't work on Linux with Proton Enabled?
Hello everyone,

I am a gaming newb and a Linux newb. I've watched a few videos online about how you can essentially play all games on Steam on a Linux laptop by Enabling Proton in the Steam Play Settings. I have enabled this and had success with a few games that aren't Linux enabled by default.

However, it seems I am unable to play GTA Vice City. Has anyone else had this problem?

Over the last few days I've purchased and installed a few games that HAVE ALL FAILED to run on Linux - despite having Proton enabled which would theoretically allow any/all games to be played on my system. These games included Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (which apparently doesn't work on Linux even when Proton is enabled), Call of Duty the original, United Offensive, and Call of Duty 2.

None of these games worked which I felt seemed a little too coincidental given my circumstance. Then I figured I'd try GTA and now this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game doesn't work either! This can't just be a coincidence now right? What am I doing wrong?

At least with those previously mentioned COD games, the game wouldn't even initiate before it stopped working. So far with Vice City, the game opens up and I hear some noise and even hear sounds when I move my mouse, but the entire screen is blank and I can't see anything.

Sorry for the long rant here but I just really don't want to have to refund yet another ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game that I really want to play simply because it doesn't work on Linux even though having the Proton thing enabled all games *should* work! This is very frustrating and rather discouraging.

Any help would be appreciated. I am a Linux and Steam newb but just want to play some games on my new laptop :(

Before buying more games, please look from here how well / or not game(s) run with Proton.
https://www.protondb.com/

Enabling Proton for ALL games is not a promise to play well or play at all.
Only whitelisted are supported but even game is not whitelisted it may still run very well.

What is your current Proton version ?
System specs ? All drivers updated and what distro ?

Game may need a launch parameter. Here is a page to look and test. (scroll down)
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/
Just an example how it is typed:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

Vice City runs great but sometimes at the start is seems to be frozen.
Just hit space and it will start....

Edit: Try older 4.11-13 Proton version
