Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Intro movie does not play
When I start the game, I get the Rockstar intro with the Commodore 64 thing but if I wait for the intro to play, there's just a black screen and nothing happens. I cannot see that great intro, and if I want to play the game I just have to skip by pressing a key during the Rockstar logo bit.

Now, I *can* play the game, but I just really like the intro and would like to know if anyone else has had that problem and how they were able to fix it.

I have already tried verifying the game's data and I have reinstalled the game.

Following that very helpful comment, I think it's time to tell how I solved the problem. Basically the intro movie is stored in the game's data as a simple video file. In the game's video files directory (Should be under your "Steam" folder, steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto Vice City\movies), you'll have two files: One named GTAtitlesGER.mpg and another one called Logo.mpg. The problematic file is GTAtitlesGER.mpg. For some godforsaken reason, the video file is from the German version, but the game is looking for the English file and can't find it. Which is why it won't play.

To solve the problem you have to rename the file to "GTAtitles.mpg" and it should solve the issue.

TL;DR Go in Vice City's game data folder, under the "movies" folder and rename "GTAtitlesGER.mpg" to "GTAtitles.mpg" to solve the problem.

Hello there Stoptimus Crime. I have Gta Vice City in my computer but it is a non-official version which has some files that have been altered. One of them being the intro, which it didn't have before, so I downloaded the Logo.mpg and the GTAtitles.mpg.
However, when I start the .exe the intro only plays the audio and I can't see any video, it's all pitch black. I believe the problem to be in the cuts.dir file found in the anim folder.

I also have gta 3 in my computer and it plays the intro perfectly, so I checked the cuts.dir file in it and it has an intro.dat written on it. Could you inform me if there is any intro.dat written in your cuts.dir file so I can fix this problem.

cuts.dir is a file for ingame cutscenes, not the intro movies.
i don't recommend modifying that file as it might break your game

That's what I was afraid of, I just wanted to check and see if mine is missing something. Do you know the name of the file that triggers the intro video to display?

it's probably hard coded into the exe file

If I could, I would kiss your face right now, no ♥♥♥♥. How haven't I thought about that, I just had to change the exe compatibility to a different one and it displayed the video correctly.

Thing is I discovered a new thing, with all compatibilities I have all my recent saves except for one, it's not important and stuff, but a long time ago I had to reinstall vice city in my pc, and I lost my saves, but now when I change it to Windows 98/me compatibility I got to them again and it made me curious, would you by some chance know what causes it?

Btw thank you so much:)
