I've tried to dig up a bit of information to see what I can come up with. If we summarize the informations we know about this valuable "package" of Love's, we know that :
1) He had to smuggle it into LC (A Drop In The Ocean) by plane to avoid the police's attention.
2) The packages look similar to drug sacks (and hidden packages), Love also refer to them as "commodities" sometimes.
3) Lots of people, especially the Colombians, want to retrieve these packages despite "the world having little understanding as to its true value" according to Love (Decoy).
4) During Escort Service, Love has you escort his packages so they can be authenticated. The company that authenticate the packages is named "AM - A Petroleum Company", located in Pike Creek, Shoreside Vale.
Now this is just my headcanon, it makes sense in some parts but there are some flaws.
We also know Love is a sociopath person and has a thing for human corpses (LCS - Morgue Party Ressurection). When he fleed Liberty City at the end of LCS, he brought along Avery Carrington and Ned Burner's dead bodies in his plane and we never heard of them again. Love comes back to Liberty City some time between LCS and III events though.
About the packages, Love seems to have more than a mere interest in these. He uses several decoys to try and conceal them from the authorities / the Cartel and spend a ton of money keeping them safe. He also clearly states he's the only one that knows their real value so he's personally acquainted with them.
My belief is these packages are Avery's body parts, seeing to which extents Love went to get back his corpse, and how he looks up to Avery (even right before his death) during LCS events. And thus, with all the heat his activites brought, Love got away with his most important possession: one of Avery's body part which was stored in this wooden box we see in Love's disappearance.
This seems to me a plausible theory, but I noticed two flaws while writing this reply:
- The company responsible for the authentication of Love's packages is a petroleum company so that doesn't fit with a dead body.
- Also, it's normal the police would be after Love for smuggling bodies into LC, but why the Cartel? They had business plans with Avery and Love was responsible for his death. So it makes sense the Cartel would get in the way of Love's ultimate objective to retrieve the packages, but why would they want their former business partner's dead body?
Anyway, this is about all I could find. I'm not used to spectulate / come up with complex theories so if my theory doesn't make full sense or I forgot a crucial detail, go ahead and debunk it! It was still fun to delve into Love's role in GTA history and I enjoyed writing these long paragraphs. :)
Well, GTA 3 was written before LCS and Avery were a thing. So if it got retconned, it would be a bit flimsy.
Originally, or maybe still is, either drugs or maybe some other valuable, diamonds? Even though that's never mentioned. It feels to me like an unfinished story element. Like they couldn't figure out Donald or his packages and just left it, abandoned it. Wanted it to go deeper but couldn't really make anything up.
It does feel like the story is going to go in another direction, but then doesn't. Maybe they felt it was too distracting from Claude's revenge plot.
