How to beat Turismo after killing Salvatore

Hey guys,
I need help with the Turismo mission. Everytime the mafia pulls me out of my car and starts shooting at me, and I have to start all over again. I tried using a tank and waiting for the Cheeta's to go through and the same thing happened. This is getting very frustrating. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do to make this easier? My car gets blown up every damn time.

Yeah, I've been working for Asuka, and just completed the "Paparazzi Purge" mission.

No, I've played GTA III before, years ago, around 2005 I think, so it's been a while.

well there's a vehicle that you get after finishing all the ray missions it's not a fast car but it's possible to finish the race in it. The car is bulletproof

Update: Almost won first place, but the mafia shot my car (Banshee) in Saint Marks and it blew up. Gonna need a BP vehicle.

Surprisingly you don't need a sports car to beat Turismo, I manage to beat it driving a patriot or any kind of van or muscle car. the AI kinda dumbs down a bit when you pick different cars, also its best to play the mission as soon as its available because like you said, as soon as you become a marked man for the triads and mafia, they will shoot at you every chance you get.

Yes It's best to do Turismo before the laundry mission even, no gang enemies. Barring that, the Mafia Sentinal is a good handling car to do the race in. You'll just have to keep at it til you survive.
I'm working on Turismo at the moment, trying to get the proofed version in my garage. I have a good method which is to head for the garage instead of following the racers, block the street with jacked cars outside the garage alley. When the racers show up they will hit the barricade and sometimes flip upside down for you. The garage is right there of course so you don't have far to push it. Problem I'm having is - if you loose sight of it for a second, it vanishes and I don't have mouse look in vehicle..

Sorry for the necro, but this is still a relevant google result, so:

I found a tactic that somewhat works and deosn't need a bullet proof car. After starting the mission, before you get to the race shoot a police so that you get two stars. Then during the race, after passing the mafia for the first time steal a police car, two stars means they will come to you, and this way you get a brand new car that hasn't been shot at with a shotgun yet.

This will probably stil ltake a few attempts because getting trough the mafia's part of town is very hard. Steer to the other side of the road if you can when you see mafia's dudes.
