unfortunately, you need to kill him before you can unlock the next ship size. You really got to abuse the abilities to take him on. Check a few of the ports near your starting base and look for things like exploding barrel and shark attack.

Yeah I've been looking but to no luck. At the moment all I can find is the flame spray, the seagull defensive buff and the shadows one that stops them attacking for a short period. But Even those don't help because if I cop two broadsides I'm pretty much finished. I'll just have to keep hunting. Ty.
git gud, lol you just need to build defenses or buff damage. your ship doesnt scale with level. levels only unlock more stuff, like higher level gear and spells. if you level up without upgrading, youre better off not leveling at all so other ships dont level up with you.
trust me, if you have good enough stats, some ships wont last 3 hits. others take 5-8. pissing on your own cannons will shred ships before they can land a hit on you. there are other strategies that make combat a breeze. that one just happens to be my favorite for more than one reason.
the frigate is my #1 favorite because of naturally long cannon shots with wide spread so it's harder to miss smaller targets, while also keeping descent speed and control of the ship. one step up from the galleon, including unique abilities, in my opinion. the brig would be my favorite if it wasnt for having the worst natural cannon range, but that's the trade-off.
the meta seems to be not to get hit, but plenty of defenses for when you do so you live. alternatively, you can just enjoy the game as is with out of combat abilities, like spells (with cooldowns) that speed you up for fast navigation, diplomacy to sneak by navy ships, and gold income focus to get rich quicker.
a good update for the game would be to buy raiding parties for ships to attack other bases on their own. that would give gold a strategical purpose outside upgrading ports.
but for this fight, yeah you just cannot tell yourself im going in to trade blows. you always lose trades. play to not get hit, like dark souls without estus flasks. a couple times i remember being far enough away, i could repair my ship as he crept near me, so bring repair kits just in case.
The issue is literally that I was stuck with the sloop till i finished off that quest, and the ship i was facing was blasting me with twice as many shots per broadside. I have since managed to chip them down over 5 mins of cat and mouse where i survived with 2 HP on my hull. Had nothing to do with skill, I've been playing Windward for years, which is pretty much a mirror image for combat in this. I was just vastly and completely outgunned, and the enemy ship remained agile enough even with no sails left, to never let me get into a good position off her bow where she couldn't hit me. So I was consistently stuck trading my piss weak blows for their decent shots. I had 80,000 gold, so if I was limited to the sloop by that mission, I would've just bought a Brig or a Frigate and blown them away ^_^;
Yeah, and that's what I had been doing. That's why I mentioned their agility. I found it really hard to use the terrain to my advantage, especially after taking a hit or two and suffering damage to the sails. I only managed to scrape the win on my heavily upgraded sloop by using terrain, every ability I had, as much sailing nous as I possibly could, and only survived with 2 hull HP, which was more luck than anything at that point.
I'd gone around and upgraded my gear as absolutely much as I could find or buy, and had roughly 80,000 spare gold, but no upgrades left to buy or find for hours.
Like I said, I've managed now, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ it was hard. Especially since I couldn't find ANY of the ability gear that other people had said to use, like explosive barrel trap etc.
