Maartin Van Hoorten is a jerk
I'm doing a capitalist dictator reform run and just got to the Agnolian trade deal. And boy is Hoorten a jerk. He hates me because I didn't build the highway and restricted immigration, and he refuses to go ahead with the deal that our teams spent months negotiating because, "there are protests in your country".

But then he has the gall to get mad if I refuse to partake in the official ceremonies and just leave after he's wasted my time by bringing me to his country for a trade deal his team negotiated that he had no intention of actually going through with.

What a jerk.

What's weird though is that my previous run was as a planned economy, emergency power, oppressive, xenophobic tyrant and he was willing to offer me the deal, even when I was a jerk to him. I could easily get a better deal by recognizing the island. Sure he complained about the human rights situation and the attack on democracy, but was willing to deal with me. Other than the emergency decree the only major change was creating the ACP rather than the SSP.

So let me get this straight. I'm a brutal tyrant who is ruling by emergency decree and oppressing my people--good trade partner. I'm an elected president who is trying to bring the chaos under control while respecting human rights---bad trade partner.

Agnolia works in mysterious ways.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, if we look deeper we can see that Angolia is surounded by 3 countries 2 of which have clear expansionist tendencies towards them (rumburg annexed half the country some decades ago and Valgsland is trying to take over part of it as we speak), logic would dictate that it would be vital for them to secure good relations with the 3rd neigbhooring country but instead they decide to jeaopardise their existing limited relationship because they want to squeze out more money from the trade deal as if they have the upper hand

Uhm Martin just wants a better trade deal since the original trade deal benefits sordland more than Agnolia, so he you know survive the Recession which hit both Sordland and Agnolia hard .
secondly if you read the codex for the past Agnolian prime minister it says his trade deals benefits Lespia, valgsland and Sordland more than Agnolia.
Also for the Highway he is just wondering why you arent investing into a region that is underdeveloped and has ties to agnolia.

A deal that bennefits Sordland would be exactly what Martin should be offering in order to secure diplomatic and military support for his country which is sqeezed between 2 hostile great powers, also Angolia needs sordland a lot more than Sordland needs Angolia and the deal should reflect that

Yeah, I agree. I was actually willing to ally with them and recognize the island as theirs, but Martin's attitude made that impossible. Now I may recognize the island as Valgsland's if it means I can trade with them.

Great diplomacy there Martin, really doing wonders for your nation. Isolating yourself from the one nation who can help you. I can see why you were reelected.
Uuh, why did you restrict migration as a capitalist?

But anyway, he is pretty meh as a politician anyways, that's why Hegel is my bro and I usually go mixed economy.
