So Suzerain is apparently a "Visual Novel"?
Steam's 2024 Replay had me as heavily playing Visual Novels and I was like "wait, what?" because to my knowledge I never played any such games. Then realized Suzerain was the only game I've played that even vaguely fits that bill...

I wonder if the devs consider their game a Visual Novel? Seems like we have far too many choices for that to be true.

doubt that, when you google visual novel the games presented have their own style. choose your own adventure games forgoe visuals but mechanicaly they play the same.

literally speaking any visual effects for a story game can be considered a visual novel but then the converastion would go in the same direction that comics are the same as manga. technically the same but different styles

For Suzerain specifically, i didnt see any art when i was in the different locations so it reminds me more of a choose your own adventure game where i use my own imagination to make up the visuals.

I think the line gets blurry between VN / RPG game, as both games have a lot of focus on characters, choices and consequences, just from different design philosophies.

IMO I see it as a RPG like Disco Elysium

I mean, I totally agree. I would never call it a Visual Novel. But Steam apparently considers it one, that's my whole point. What a weird classification.

tags are up to the users, advertising Suzerain as a Visual Novel alongside others is hilarious

There is no XP levelling, no monsters to kill, no dungeons to explore. Game is more or less linear. it does look like a visual novel.

I would say it does fit the description of a visual novel - I don't mind the tags, the game is great and the devs are sigma.

Disco Elysium is a good example, the way the characters react at what you say and do is similar. They remember, and you cannot play picking every dialog option. Every word can have an impact in the world.

I'd say the lines are blurry. While it doesn't have the 'look' of a visual novel, it does play a lot like one. It's very similar to something like Long Live the Queen in terms of theme and gameplay, and that is unquestionably in the VN category.

Suzerain and VNs are both narrative, largely text based games. Personally, I'd say there are not enough visuals in Suzerain for me to consider it a true VN. But I think they're close enough to be considered relatives.
Well, kinda? Visual novels are essentially text RPG's with pictures. Granted, we don't have portraits and scenes and all, but we have a cool map, some stuff laying around, sound effects for events, like a train sound when you open a railway.
idk, it just really threw me. I guess to my mind a visual novel is a very specific type of game and style, and I generally don't play those. (I played original Doki Doki Lit Club back when it was new and free, many years ago - I think that's the only one I've ever played.) I definitely never thought of Suzerain as a visual novel, and I still wonder what the devs think.

Is a hot dog a sandwich?
I mean i consider it one, since my definition is a game that is mostly text, that is visualized.
