I really like the added challenge aspect of a path like this! Either inviting the former royalty back and becoming their Prime Minister or assuming the throne for yourself and family.
That is because a monarch keeps the elite in check. So the elite is happy the king is gone (because now they have power) while the population isn't (because now the elite can screw them over).
To reinstate the monarch you need to pull an Octavian; you can't rely on the existing elite to save the country because they are the ones killing it.
Bit of a different situation, considering Napoleon also became a monarch as well.
