Ping is also affected by the path the data transmission takes to travel between you and your friends Sometimes a node or multiple nodes might be down or overloaded, so the data will be redirected when transmitting between you and your friends or it takes a bit longer too pass throw the back log thus causing a higher ping.
The problem could also be with your respective internet providers, if they are having issues, that can cause a delay in data transmission causing a higher ping.
The speed of your internet service can be another factor, if everything I mentioned above is working properly, lower speed = higher ping, higher speed = lower ping.
As you are using your system to host the server, make sure your system is fully optimized to handle the extra load of others connecting to you. Same applies if you have a separate system being used as the server.
