Patching causing full download
Why are these patches causing me to download the entire game again?

Thankfully, it's not forcing you to download the entire game again.
However, due to the way they have packaged the game files, even a single byte change requires a touch/rewrite of the entire 30.5gb enshrouded.kfc_data single-file archive.

When Steam updates a game there are two stages; The download stage, followed by the application stage. During the latter Steam will show x / 30.5GB as it is touching and rewriting that single 30.5gb file with the updates that have been downloaded.
But again, you're not actually downloading all of that, it's just Steam telling you it's having to go through a lot of data on disk.

You can verify this yourself by checking the network vs disk usage in either Steam or the task manager during an update.

They dont....

well ... sometimes they do sometimes they don't, or at least that's what steam is doing. To me it feels like everytime I stop and start the game it has a new update ... that's quite extreme even for EA ... but at least it does show the developers are trying to fix the issues
Thank you Jattenalle. I learned something new today. Much appreciated.

What Jattenalle said is of course true but nevertheless for me I had at least 2 full 8.x GB downloads additionally to those about 2xx kb hotfixes followed by the copying. But I admit that could be related to steam running on linux with proton too ... or a mixture of different effects.

I have to download 8.4GB again after every small patch (around 300kb). On a pcie4 nvme drive so it's not a slow disk causing it.

*patching* is not downloading...

So no, you DONT download 8.4gb ...

It literally freezes at the installing section for me, stopping at 34.5 mb. No other game does that. Trying to restart steam causes it to not shut down properly and on restart it then says missing download files. Sorry, *something* clearly isn't working as intended when a hottfix takes about 20 minutes to resolve. Yesterday's patch had the exact same issue. I downloaded the game in 35 on day one, so it's not like my pc has issues installing it, but the way patches are going it might be more efficient to reinstall it over and over...

Same problem, will download for hours after a hotpatch, even worse now: my mouse is running crazy, only in this game, as soon as I alt tab out, mouse stops its erratic movements (any adjusting the sensitivity yield no result). Game's'riddled with bugs it seems, or Steam, or both, not sure. Also use pop os, so proton 7 GE

Having the same issue. Thank you for the explanation.

So patching the game used my network?

Steam says 8MB/s network and very little on disk usage. this is confirmed by task manager.

Some people are having this happen to them, if it isn't happening to you great, If all you can say to "I've got a problem" is "no you don't" it's probably best not to post. There's many people complaining of this issue, and yeah some of them are confused by "patching" but this isn't everyone and there's clearly something going on.

I believe I found out what's happening. Well maybe there's more to it but at least that's my current working thesis. I don't know why but this game for some reason triggers a "verify" almost every single steam/game start. While it's strictly not doing a "new" download it seems that in order to verify it's gonna download all the data for comparison ... thats's just crazy.

First, I couldn't run the game for 2 days - there was a white window and nothing happened. Then suddenly it worked on its own and I played like that for 2 days. Then today I launch the game and it doesn't work. I press start and nothing. Damn, I was glad that it worked and the problems would be over. I was wrong about this game - like an old car, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Have you found a solution to this? Currently experiencing the same thing. I've finished downloading the patch, and now I'm stuck at the Installing stage. Restarting the PC didn't do anything. Now I'm about to reinstall the entire game.
