How to reliably get metal scraps?
It seems a lot of the early game progression relies on it, but I hardly manage to find any.

The quests will guide you to Rookmore, there is quiet a bit of metal scraps there, also trashing the metal beds (I use a pickaxe) will yield some scraps easily.
You should get the quest to Rookmore when you rescue the blacksmith, and he starts the upgrade your equipment quest, then a marker is placed on the map...roughly west of the bridge... its a bit of a slog but manageable.

Hope that helps.

Kill bandits/scavs, everything inside their base has the possibility to drop scraps too, so break everything, those cages drop scrap, break them all, Rookmore should net you a lot of scrap, and late game you will have so much already that you will ditch them, late game scavs drop more scrap.
Break metal things, Use blunt dmg Wep

Blow things up. In the scavenger camps set off the landmines (run past them) or explosive barrels (using ranged weapons obviously) often the debris yields scrap metal.

For breaking stuff try the felling axe or pickaxe to see which does the most damage to a given target. I like to put the axe on the alternate hotbar with the same number as my main weapon so it's quick to switch back and forth.

The grenades* you find all over the place are good for breaking things, and -aren't- good for combat, so blowing things up for salvage is a reasonable use for them.

Finally, there are interactive scrap piles in the scavenger camps that often yield scrap metal. Some are trapped, so be ready to scamper. If you look closely first you can usually see the explosives underneath. Do those last because if they blow up the un-trapped containers you get less loot.

* Not to be confused with grenade-looking summoning vessels undead casters sometimes drop, which are very handy against certain bosses.

Dont blow things up with grenades though. This information is false.
It will destroy the things, but it wont give any resources ..

You must use tools to get resources from it ..

the bridge area has a lot in the breakables and once you have a hook its a short hop from the starter location. Almost everything in the game is plentiful somewhere. If it feels like you are having to work for something, you are looking in the wrong place. Exceptions exist, of course, like shroud wood and hard wood require actually chopping trees -- you get a little in the wild but you can't blow up whole shroudwood cities that I know of.

Like all the bits and pieces in this game, they start as a famine and end as a glut. I always keep a small stack of metal scraps in my backpack to make keys.
Go to the Bandit and Scavenger camps and kill everyone.

You will collect tons of metal scraps and torn clothes.

You can also go back to Cinder Vault (where you spawned at start of game) Break all the pods in the room. Takes a bit of time and may need a couple of pick axes, but if need scrap in a pinch...
