Using the road-blocks?

Is there some trick to use the roadblocks in a way that you get a good looking result without it taking forever?

placing them directly = utter chaos
digging a trench and plasing boxes inside = better but a lot of randomness to the results
putting them on building blocks = magic floating road

[....]

The only working way i found for now is way too much work:

- Biggest block of wood - just build it half way into the ground
- remove the blocks with right click to have a perfect cut out
- paste the biggest earth way on each side to get the base for the path
- fill up the hole with road blocks and never change height

[....]

And how on earth do you place a wodden fence on an uneven ground straight?
