You need to gather those, convert them into blocks (which takes no time but turns them from general purpose resources into building blocks) and then build.
The nicer materials and placeables are locked behind game progression which to be fair is grindier than some, less so than others.
So if you don't like the survival game playstyle but would just rather build I recommend a game with a Creative Mode like Conan Exiles in stead where you can ignore the game and just build build build and decorate as you like.

It's ok if you use basic materials, but I find it way to grindy when you've opened up some different block types and want to actully try to make use of them in a good way to create variety etc. Sort of making me stop a bit on bothering building what I want to build.
If you build a town out of the rarest mats - yes there will be grind.
