gib native linux client
Very much intrigued and would buy this if there was a native linux client. Just fyi in case devs read it. Not yet intrigued enough to wine this. On a scale of "it's nice we can play windows games on linux now" to "we don't need wine anymore" i'm at "wave a flag for penguin freedom".

New thread cause i found too many "need linux server" threads and got bored on page.. something. This is about the client. Tho having a native linux server would at least be... intriguing.

Also i hope some smarty goes "there's native client, dummy" some day in the future. Then i get notification and can buy without having to constantly watch the project until then. Savvy?

The game runs perfectly fine through Proton if you lower / disable some system crashing graphics options.

Didn't even have to lower or disable any game settings. Runs fine with proton out of the box.
It also has gold status on proton-db already.
The roadmap also covers steam deck compatibility which prerequisits proton compatibility.

Why no native client? Well... it's a bit of a hen and egg problem. Wine/Proton works fine for running windows games on linux. Making a native version requires additional development effort, maintenance and support.
So according to steam survey with 97% using windows and <2% using linux... i guess it's obvious why they don't put effort in making a native client.

As for the servers, it's the other way round. Most servers run on linux. So providing a native linux-(only)-server although the client is windows-only, still makes sense. However, our server also ran with wine under linux.

Funfact besides: There is even an interview of john carmack (id software) where he stated, that id software even STOPed providing native linux clients, as they mostly did in the past, because wine/proton works so good, native clients are not even necessary anymore.
(However as far as i understood, they still check and optimize their games for wine compatibility)

I had to set reflections to nothing higher than balanced and use the "env radv_zero_vram=true %command%" launch option or it would hard crash my system / graphics driver as soon as it starts the intro video. Although I didn't test the option again after setting the launch option so maybe it works fine if you set that. Just lowered various options & tested repeatedly in the beginning before setting the launch option. I also have to use Proton-GE since experimental just doesn't launch anymore for some reason, I think since the last game update possibly.
Yeah, yeah, i'm aware. However, repliers seem to have missed the point being: i'd buy if there was a native client. I'm also aware that they probably don't care about that single sale. To me the game looks nice enough for me to be interested, but with my current backlog i'll probably not buy unless a) multiple friends ask me to join or b) there's a native linux client, which i would definitely want to support.

So this thread doesn't exist to get a solution running it in wine. I looked up prodondb and knew i could do it. The point of this thread is to voice what would tip my buying decision and to raise a flag for penguins. Nothing more. Not being salty or anything. I'm also aware of the current linux market share and how insignificant it might seem, but that doesn't invalidate the wish to change it.

There's very little incentive for native Linux clients. Proton in most cases even works better, because it requires less maintenance. A lot of games that do have native Linux clients run better with Proton because of that, some even are very much broken unless they run in very specific environments (like Ubuntu). If you want to support Linux gaming, you should support Proton. Because ultimately that's what brought Linux gaming to a mainstream audience and the more people play on Linux the more developers will look at it as a serious competition to Windows & provide support for it. Crying for native clients however is kinda just beating a dead horse at this point.

It doesn't invalidate your wish, but your wish is so realistic like me wishing for water should flow uphill.
Wine/Proton made playing on linux at least suitable in the broad. Which means you can run MOST games under linux instead of just very few that have native clients.

If you want to "push" linux with waiting or even demanding for native clients you are putting the cart before the horse. Wine/Proton (especially with the efforts invested by Steam) is currently the way to increase linux usage and improve game compatibility, meaning the developers also pay attention for their games running good with proton.

Games themselfes and with that also the development become more and more complex. With that even more ressources are missing to develop two different client versions.
Developers won't do that, even if marketshare between Windows and Linux would be 50:50.
If they don't want to ignore one platform they will always look for a way to make the same codebase run on both. Since Windows or to be more preceise DirectX is the (overwhelming) dominant platform, Wine/Proton is this compatibiliy layer to run games on linux.

Ah yes, and one perfect example against it is ARK. It has a native linux client and so by default you get the native client installed via steam by default. But the native client is completely broken. Looks even like not having received an update since the first release of the game *lol*. The windows version with proton however runs fine.
I'm already playing on Linux (Proton experimental) both on an NVidia and AMD GPU. It works fine.
