What class do you recommend for single play?
I am having some issues with combat. I’m at the current maximum level (Albaneve update). Shroud level just below the cyclops head level. More than 120 skill points used (basically a mix of ranged and one handed). Bull armor, bull shield and a legendary one handed axe.

Every enemy in my level range hits for 20% to 33% of my health, if it is more than one, I’ll get to critical health even having skills and an axe that provide health leach. I love the game, but the combat has been a major problem for some time now.

Not sure if you can call it a class, but I'm using wands. Hat and Gloves for Wand/magic damage and crit chance, heavy chest and leg armor for health and stamina, medium boots for stamina regeneration. It's similar to what most meele builds would be, but with intelligence instead of strength. No need for mana if you're just using wands. Use stamina to avoid getting hit by dodging or double jumping out of harms way.
Enemy groups can be taken down by walking backwards while attacking with the wand and then jumping/dodging to distance once they close in. Rinse and repeat.
Bosses are usually simpler. Learn their patterns and avoid getting hit. I found this much easier at wand-range than in melee. Except the bloody dragon who is absolutely not designed to be beaten with this build, I didn't have any problems the entire game.

As for talents: Pick all the magic dmg and healing stuff not related to spells or benefiting other players (except the healing aura, which is also nice for solo), also the wand related stuff and the tank talents next to it. Mostly focus on intelligence, but also pick up constitution and endurance when handy. Especially on the way to double jump and updraft (optional, but I consider it a must-have for traversal and exploration).

The problem with the 20-33% of health per hit still exists with some enemies, but unlike melee you don't have to get hit a lot with this build. Also carry a few wands of different damage types with you and you can always get effective hits making combat a lot easier.

I'm level 32 melee with the level 33 warrior armor and level 38 weapons.
I can easily kill any enemy even the level 35 flame sword guys.
Also 2 or 3 enemies are doable. I play on default settings.
You must be doing something very wrong or have a bad Skilling. I have 1200 HP and tank skills and 2 live leech rings. I use 1h sword (old twin sword) and shield.

Where do you find weapons that can be upgraded up to level 38?

I'll shamelessly link my thread about archetypes.

Short form is 2h warrior is likely the strongest and simplest to play, after its its staff>1h warrior>=wand>bow>>dagger.

The further you go north, the higher is the stuff.
Cap for upgraded weapons is 40.

Are you using food and potions for buffs?

server settings are a thing.
The late game enemies hit for a lot even with level 33 armor, especially the ones with big weapons that come running for you, so you need to dodge and parry more than anywhere else in the game.

As for the general answer to the thread title:
Just make sure you get double jump and water aura as soon as you can: everything else doesn't really matter from there. Honestly, I feel like all classes are in a good place right now.

Warrior/Rogue playstyle is pretty low maintenance and tends to get a lot of useful weapons. The only limiting factor is health regeneration, but tons of bandages, potions, healing foods and spells mitigate that. I'd say it's the best all-rounder, though it might have to learn boss and enemy patterns better to avoid damage and deliver the most damage.

Mage playstyle is medium maintenance, because you got eternal spells and wands that are mid range, but there are still some things you need to craft manually. Once you get your spell skills you can spam fireballs to AoE perma stun non-boss enemies, but your cast time tends to be slow and you rely mostly on wands for high DPS. It's also really tough against bosses and early-mid game unless you have a high level ice AND fire wand.

Ranger is high maintenance, you will need to gather a lot more resources since you rely on consumables and craft arrows a lot. There's the Eternal Ice Arrow but that takes tons of mana and deals very low ice damage only. On the flip side, a single lucky hit can obliterate most groups, and you can cheese non-Fell bosses with shroud arrows. Even if you don't cheese them, shooting them a few times in the head with any other arrow not only deals massive damage but also stuns them, which allowed me to kill bosses much faster and easier than any other build.

I have to disagree with the entire post.
As warrior with the highest armor, anything below minibosses tickles you.

Double jump is a nice to have, but outsides of some cheese not a must have.
Water aura is quiet weak as non mage, its about 1 extra hp ring if you decide to go for hp reg rings. Imo leech is far stronger altough it can be rare to get.

Mage doesn't need wands, neither are they high dps. Mage got better spells for aoe and single target dps by quiet a lot.

I wouldn't call bow ranger faster killing or easier killing for bosses.

Double jump is for exploration because the terrain collision is awful and you'll end up often playing a slip-n-slide if you don't have it. Good luck tunneling or scaling any vertical surface without simulating a frustration platformer like Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy.

Water Aura is a nice QoL and stacks with all other sources of regeneration. It's especially good in the early-mid when you can only get +1 regen from rings and +1 from berries, so you have to eat bandages every time you get hit even once.

The other points: lol ok

Thats why double jump is a nice to have.

Op is lvl 35 with 120 skillpoints, so endgame where water aura is quiet irrelevant unless you got plenty of int. It has some uses early game and starts falling off midgame as you aquire other means of healing in from of regen items, leech items and eternal spells. cheap bandages are still useful, even the lowest heal 40% hp and are quiet cheap to masscraft.
