Is logging in/out to farm chests a form of cheating?
Do you do it and if so, do you feel like it's cheating?

It's probably unintended player behavior, but "given half a chance, players will optimize the fun out of any game". Different folks find different things "fun".

I do snag a few gold chests I've already gotten when I start the game up again (if I pass near them), but I haven't found it necessary to "reverse save scum" by placing an altar as close as I can to the chest that has something special in it and bouncing in and out of the game until it has what I want.

That being said, I see no real issues with it; runes are easy to come by anyway, and some people simply can't stand not having that perfect legendary bow (or wand or sword or whatever), and they do things in a sub-optimal way in pursuit of that goal... It's a single-player/co-op game, so it's not like there's really any advantage they're gaining over some one else who doesn't do it.

To be completely honest, I don't think it's all that different from changing the "difficulty" settings of the world to make enemies die in one hit, or doubling the drop rate of materials. If that's what someone finds fun, then so be it... or to put it another way, "If it's not fun, why are you playing?"

I do as @umop-apisdn notes; drop by a few 'old' gold chests on loading into the game for a session. But I personally find the load-loot-reload-loot farm far, far too boring for my liking.

You can easily complete the game content with just what you find or can craft with no need to scum farm loot. But as mentioned, some people want the best and will farm until they get it. Nothing wrong with that, just not for me.

Also, there is very real chance that all that 'gold loot' you spent so much time farming will no longer be the 'cap' when the next content drop comes and levels are increased. Just something to think about.

IMO if you are going to load-loot-reload-loot farm then just save the time and go to a PRW and get the wanted item since in essence you are cheesing it anyway,

There's something special to be said about knowing that if you pass a specific piece of content, you know you haven't cheesed your way thought it. Would be nice to have an official server or something (maybe for each difficulty bracket) that gives special achievements for playing on them.
No not cheating. Actually intended. Only way to build up flames and other high quantity needed recipe parts.

i wouldnt say its cheating but as soon as you do this all the fun will instantly drain out of the game for you. So you should resist for that reason.

These are both true.

I've done it and many others have, the RNG in this game is not great and get worse with every weapon/ armor piece they add to the game, combine that with the chests having consumables/ arrows in them as well makes the RNG really diluted.

I've gone through everything the natural way 2 to 3 times before save scumming so to speak. It used to be a lot worse in the early days when the refresh timer was 2 hours real time but later on got reduced to 30 minutes.

Most chests that contain the best of the best don't have a clear path to them, need to fight your way through to them (which is expected), after x amounts of runs and not getting what you are looking for, players get tired of doing all that fighting for nothing that benefits them. There's no auction house or currency system in the game, so it's not like we can sell unwanted items to earn currency and buy what we want once we have enough.

There also isn't any system where we can alter unwanted stuff to something we want like other games have.

I would say that runes are a currency. One of the reasons I can see for repeatedly farming a profitable chest is to salvage the "wrong" drops (or duplicates) for the ability to respec while trying out lots of build possibilities.

This is my experience as well. I wish the developers had thought this out more. Players are saying it's a necessity, but I don't like the idea of playing this way. Honestly, I don't even like the idea of being able to change (at a whim) the world settings just to cheese your way through something. People say it's not cheating but it sure feels like it.
I have never felt the need to diminish intended exploration that way, but people do what they want.

In this case you use whatever items you find, axe, sword, staff, etc. and adapt? In theory you could get really lucky and find what you want for your build, but what if it doesn't pan out that way?

Not everyone feels the need to follow some "meta" build guide; Some of us are generalists who build our skills organically. I like to think it makes us better players; it definitely means we take longer to "finish" a game.

I wasn't thinking of following any meta build guide. If you start your build as a warrior and quickly discover that the better-quality items, you're picking up are all mage related you would need to change your skill tree accordingly. Doesn't this get expensive?

... not really? Respec is fairly cheap, so unless you're doing it on a regular and frequent basis, you can still afford to power up all the weapons want to use with the ones you find just from following quests and squashing baddies.
