At the start of the game it seems to do more damage than other basic weapons.
I will have to recheck!
There are precious few instances where using gathering tools as weapons is preferable to using actual weapons. It's not worth worrying about. The game's design ethos doesn't seem amenable to this sort of lateral thinking, anyway.
There isn't really much difference between "Not using Lock on targeting" and "Disabling Lock on targeting". I realize the ability to disable it doesn't exist, but (I'm not sure if I rebinded the key or not but) My lock on targeting function is enabled by clicking the middle mouse button...and if people are like me, they don't use it, and/or forgot about it. (Also I think a lot of people just don't use the Lock on mode, because most of the time it just causes you to dodge right into other enemies attacks...)
I think the thing both of you aren't taking into consideration is that a lot of us aren't powering through the game. I have been playing for weeks and haven't progressed passed basic tools, and wood building materials, because I am choosing to savor the game, and some people (no doubt) are not as good at gaming, and/or also taking their time as well.
In this rare case, what I was saying is true, and is in fact a very relevant idea and suggestion. If the person is a new player, and struggling to kill the enemies on the Braelyn Bridge...(for example), using a felling axe with lock on mode might just be the perfect strategy and suggestion they were looking for. (Even if in some situations the felling axe does a bit less damage than another 1 handed weapon, the attacking animations of the felling axe are more broad/wide/sweeping and, you're unlikely to get hit, and thus able to fight the enemies more effectively.)
I personally saw my friend struggling a lot with those enemies because they don't wait their turn to attack you, like the regular mushroom enemies (The Fell), so just using normal tactics and regular weapons to fight them is very ineffective and frustrating for my friend.
My post was for people like that, who are stuck at the start of the game, and can't beat certain enemies, and need a different way to deal with those enemies, and essentially have more fun at the same time.
