Unlocking Insulated Padding
I read online its from the yaks and you have to tame them. I havent seen any Yaks yet, nor do I have any bait for that.. Nor do i see any quests that would lead me to that!

You have to explore the north and there solve the quest to solve the 1st Spire. That will unlock the follow-up Quest to gather wool. When done you should be able to craft insulated paddings.
the huntress makes the padding from processed wool and leather , cloth etc. yak food/bait is made by the farmer./

I’m thinking I might be locked behind my shroud level. It’s only level 4

Yes, you need the max level shroud protection flame to go into the Albaneve Summit area

Imagine the Skyrim Generation trying to play Morrowind. No map markers. No compass.

Imagine just answering a question and then moving on with your life. Imagine both the Skyrim and Morrowind generation doing that.

Imagine if people actually played the and followed the quest lines as they get them which leads you through the game and as you progress you trigger different things (other quests, things to craft etc).

Imagine if people had lives and hadnt been on in 6 months then came back and were completely lost. Stop being such a scumbag, the question was answered by people who arent as miserable as you are, so all is good.

So you get out there and explore doing the quest lines as you get them regardless if you've been away 1 day or many months. You've had the game long enough to know how the questing and exploring works.

Is it possible to repair locations you find? LIke old broken down forts etc? It seems like theres things that cant be destroyed or repaired.

If it lets you build a flame altar then you can probably repair it, you just have to find the same build materials as the building, you won't be able to slap down flame altars inside of settlements and what not, so... Yeah.

you dont have to tame the yaks to get what you need. i dont know who told you that but all you have to do is kill them.
