point of breeding animals?
I tamed two goats, gave them beds and food and eventually they made a third goat.
What is the point though?
To kill them to get fur, bones, meat? It is much easier and quicker to just hunt them.

I was hoping to get resources for free. Apparently not meat but fur and maybe milk, or to make compost for farming.

Until now I have bunnies and goats and don't know what to do with them as even after some days the little ones are still not grown up and don't want to kill them because taming them was so much more time consuming than hunting is.

I also find so much meat everywhere I don't go hunting at all. Especially since I have to fight wolves anyways and their meat gives better buffs than bunny or goat.

What is the point of breeding aside of having some animals running around in my base?

Yaks - provide wool used in many late game items
Furry goats - furry milk which is an ingredient to some good foods
Goat - milk, good to just drink or used in some recipes
etc
All the animals provide a resource that is useful.
All you have to do is give them a roof over their head for shelter, a bed, and food. Then approach them and it will show how many off their resources are available above their head.
As to baby animals, after a certain amount of time instead of just petting them, you can upgrade them to adults which then provide resources.

I guess a roof is not enought for them and i have to build a small hut for them to be productive.
There was some indicator above their head but I read it as being hungry and didn't bother since there was food and someone complained about his animals being hungry in front of food.
I assume this indicator is a sign something is not right, regardless of food, shelter, ...?

thanks for explaining
If the red symbol above there head is a vague looking building with a line-drawing roof, then yes, the shelter needs to be adjusted.
I usually build a 3x3 foundation, put walls on 2 sides and the back wall - obviously leaving the front without walls so I can get in.
Fully roof it, put their beds inside - but do NOT put the beds to close to the walls as they can glitch through - and then, if you want, use the fences to create an outdoor space for them.

Thanks for the hint.

I have to change some things then to comfort my animals.
I have to check if a roof (as building block type) is necessary. Currently they are below a balcony (floor type) without an explicite roof.

It is until it isn't. Once you figure out shelter/food/bedding then breeding starts, have enough beds and breeding continues.... and continues. Eventually, in theory, you can have a full size ranch going with so many animals you'd never have to hunt again.

Think of it as rebuilding civilization from mere hunter gatherer types to something a bit more neolithic.

You really do not need them, they were added in for the Role-Playing crowd, the ones that like building hundreds of pointless but pretty items inside their bases, the return you get from taming compared to just going out and killing them where you see them is laughable, i tamed and then removed all pets, i only kept the dog for the petting buff, but even that is not needed and hardly makes a difference.

As i said, its just for pretty or to make your base feel populated, much like when they added the wander feature to your workers, i turn that nonsense off, having to chase around my base and grounds to find one of the donuts is not my idea of fun, but the RP crowd likely love it.

It's not. i have my yak herd with a cave for shelter. Just need beds fully covered. Food does not have to be sheltered. Your balcony may not be deep enough - does it give you the sheltered condition if you stand where the pet bed is?
