Personally, having played this for awhile on a humble 1660ti (and a laptop version at that), I really don't feel it's "terribly" optimized. It's probably not optimally optimized, but I don't expect it to be in EA. Being EA, I also wonder if there is debug code enabled to help the devs find those elusive computer bugs before making the gold master. A debug / test build is inheritance slower than the final release build.
All you can do is lower Global Illumination or Indirect Lighting they seem to call it in game. That and use FSR 3 or DLSS. And ofc try 1080p as a last resort. But yes the game requires a beefy gpu. I'm sure it can use some optimization. Even i turn Indirect Lighting down to High with my RTX 4080 as below.

And Captain, cpu useage is minimal as shown in above pics.
Onyx, only thing that looks horrendous to me is the icon background on the tool bar. I hate stuff that's blurry or out of focus. And game is extremely stable here.
So potatos PC like mine ran this game for more than 500 hours and had zero issues, i mean zero, no CTD, no BSD, nothing, not even a stutter on the crowded areas.
So imo go down a notch, ditch the 4k full on all the crap you can turn on on the settings and go down until it works flawlessly, that is until the devs finally fix it and you can play with all the bells and whistles your humongous PC can support.
I still wish it didn't turn my laptop into the surface of the sun, however (ie - heat due to pegged GPU all the time). My machine might be a potato compared to many listed here, but it normally runs cooler and quieter on the vast majority of other games I play with similar graphics.
For people who are playing on large monitors this is an exponentially larger issue. My main concern is that the game runs at a proper resolution and I would accept any visual downgrade to achieve that. Unfortunately this game cannot run at 4k lowest settings.
Also, I don’t think the poor performance is related to the CPU, because most of the time my GPU is at 99% utilization. I’m using an RTX 3070, by the way. In my house, the FPS is around 80–90, but in some regions, it drops below 60.
I am running Enshrouded on a 4k 49" ultrawide on Balanced setting with a stable 60 fps when playing solo, using < 1% GPU (RTX 3080) and an average of 16% - 22% CPU usage (10th gen i7).
My FPS fluctuates between 50 - 60 when playing with others, but it seems to be a universal dip and not based on number of players.
Also, I typically have a GPU-intensive idle game running in the background at all times, so perhaps this might be contributing to lower than what is possible.
I have a 5800X, and a 6800 XT, no overclock, 32G of some unknown memory, and I runs 4k at quality settings just fine. It's running at around 45 FPS, which is fine for me.
Switch to performance and I get 80 FPS, but it looks worse to me, and I can't tell the difference in FPS.
Maybe the game runs better on AMD?
I may be mistaken with what I'm talking about, but in my game, everything is at highest settings being put through a Sony Bravia 8 4k OLED tv and the Razer Cortex app I have tells me I'm getting 121 FPS average. I never have slow-downs or any problems.
The only problem I've experienced is upon exiting, I get some stupid "AppLock.exe" error.
It makes the screen go black for a while then it comes back. I'm not even sure if it's actually Enshrouded causing it (cause I've been playing only it for a long time.)
