there are a lot of variables to control, including who can join and what they can do on your server although i strongly advice against allowing anyone to join your server...people will wreck whatever you build eventually (sad little trolls will be sad little trolls)
We rent one from Gportal and are very happy with what we got although we have to restart the server every few days or the performance deteriorates.
For Enshrouded you don't need a 60 slot server either so it's not that expensive to just rent one.
On the other hand, if you have a spare computer that can run 24/7 and you don't mind setting it up yourself, you can run it yourself.
I hope that helps.
I don’t need to bring the server down for performance issues, though me and my friends do so to let some stuff respawn if one needs ( you will get server error messages even if the game works perfectly, so get used to it ).
When you start up the game, you are presented with 3 options:
"Private" is a single player game.
"Host" is for when you want to play with other people. You can password-protect your game to make sure no random strangers can join if you want to only play with friends/family, as well as set up settings, permissions and maximum number of people. I've been hosting on my laptop without a problem, no dedicated server required. I do have Discord installed, though, for communication, as there's no in-game chat yet, of any description.
"Join" is for joining other people's servers, which presents you with a list of available servers. The one hosted by your Steam friends is always at the top of the list.
One last thing - you can play in any mode using the same savegame. So you can be private one day and hosting the next, with the same character and without losing progress.
apart from possible performance issues when you are hosting for multiple people that is basically it.
it might not be a "need" but it can be a very nice luxury to have.
Hang on, does this mean that you can set up a server in such a way, that the world resets do not happen? I thought I had read in another thread, that they reset every 30 minutes, even if the server is running 24/7. Or can that be customized?
Well, while it's indeed true that me and my friends don't restart the server due to technical issues ( lag/performance issues ), we do take it down once in a while ( I think the best we managed to do is to keep the server up for 3 consecutive days ) if anyone needs stuff specific stuff.
But as far as I happened to see, most of the stuff doesn't respawn like mineral deposits, terrain changes, probably even trees but I am not sure.
Even modifies outside the altar range will last ( until a reset occurs ).
I am not sure about quests/items ( for example skins and chests ) and shroud roots / elixir wells ( but I think all this stuff does respawn after a while ).
although we waited at a shroud root once and had it respawn just fine so i am not sure how it handles everything.
at least that is how the default server settings work, i am not sure if you can even change the reset timer.
If I remember rightly, it is possible to have up to 8 players in your hosted game. So maybe you need a dedicated server for 9-16 players.
you can wait for each other to progress the quest line and use the other moments to mine, build, explore, whatever.
again, not needed but it's a nice little extra to have.
Damn, you are right!
I didn't realize our base ended up exending the area up to a nearby mine after some upgrades ( reason why we assumed mines didn't respawn ).
Could it be that structures built outside the range of an altar remains until the server restarts? A friend built a pretty long stair up to the sky ( moving 2 altars to increase the height ) and it does seem the whole stair remained a long time.
I would only ever consider it if I had a group of people that I game with regularly. It is useful even for playing with my family members who live in the same house as me, so that they can log on without having to fire up and run the computer of whoever has the saved game. If you're playing solo I can't think of a reason that you would need one.
So, to sum things up:
- If you have one person in your gaming group (maybe even yourself) who is available to play more often then the others, and they don't mind being the host Every time you load up the multiplayer save, then you Don't need a dedicated server, as the game will just be saved on that person's computer for others to join.
- If the members of your gaming group wish to have the ability to play that save at any time, Without the need to wait for the host to be available, then you Do need a dedicated server.
