Mainly i just spam ice bolts, it helps on crowed control with the slow effect.
Switch to fireballs when i want the extra aoe damage to hit lots of targets.
Bare in mind i play with Enemy Amount-Many, Simultaneous Enemy Attacks-Very Hard, Enemy attack Frequency-200%, Enemy and Boss Damage-200%, everything else related 100%. So Crowed Control is mandatory.
Bandits are weak to ice, Vukah to fire, Shroud fell enemies to fire, ice, anything but shroud damage really.
If you are wondering about the skill tree i always go fire, since fireball is the best spell and the fire aura is great, i mean great with a capital G, those annoying flying bugs are toast before they annoy you, any enemy near gets toasted with good damage after you get INT high enough, love that passive, like water aura i find it a must have for any mage ( along with double jump and updraft too).
