as far as i know, they are still a pretty useless way of getting normal glass that you can just skip and forget.
just get sand and charcoal.

glass is not the same as glass shards.

You can use them to make glass, but as @Mush said it is really an inefficient way to make it. Perhaps in the future they will be used for something else or just removed from the game.

Just discovered that the carpenter can make glass from the shards. I don't know how I didn't see that before.

You eventually can make it out of sand & something else, I forget at the moment.
