Toss the bait, approach from behind, pet, back off. Bait position matters.
Tamed all 3 dogs and cats, didn't consider it really difficult. I didn't use any special gear, bombs, pickaxes or anything.
It isn't impossible, just frustrating because of the lack of space in regard to some of the pets.
Latest case was a basement in some desert place that had barely any space. Explosives and sneak gear fixed that eventually.
The dog, just be behind it, toss the bait in front of the dog.
It's not as hard as you are making it out to be. Try slowing down.
The problem isn't distance, it's line of sight. You can be literally within arm's length of the creature, but if there's a wall between you, it's fine. Use this to your advantage. Other than that, sure, I agree, I'm really not a fan of the taming system (I rarely am). I'd like them to add an extra setting (I am aware of the existing one) to it where we can multiply (up or down) the amount of hearts needed. Let those of us who don't like it set it to "one and done", and those who like it, set it to infinity pats.
It's also a pain when you're on a hill or mountain and the bait rolls off down the cliff roll eyes.
Ugh yea I had the one in the dog prison place with the undead hounds run off into the nearby hill so I chased it down to more reasonable ground.
But yes, the sneak boots make it far easier to escape them before they get upset after feeding / petting. black powder bomb helped in creating more room.
I also had the one cat that's in a bandit camp in some basement run out of said basement at night leading me on a merry chase before I found it outside in a wide open area making it far easier. Sometimes, you just need to chase them around a bit or blow things up I guess lol.
Yes the cat in the Alchemist's Tower - I had my altar too close (even though the aoe didn't reach it) and the cat wouldn't show up, so I moved it and it reappeared. I have the cat stored in a chest now because its meowing was driving me a little crazy lol.
