If the lizard corpses de-spawned as soon as you looted them you could find yourself in the middle of a tar pool sinking fast (to your death).
And in some of the Halls you can end up with a dead boss in the 'lava'. As it stands now you can jump onto the corpse, loot it and jump back. If the corpse de-spawned as soon as you looted it you would find yourself 'in' the lava.
Again, not sure, but it may be intentional so as to allow players to loot corpses in what would otherwise be precarious situations.
Corpses that don't disappear have a bugged health bar where some random amount of health is still left and they disappear when you hit that bar to zero. I've seen such health bar issues in other games and its always a bug.
You take such pictures before looting ofc.
