pet feeding problem?
This is a question and a suggestion. So far, I have rescued the dog, tamed and brought into pens 3 hophares and 3 goats. The goats were the first, and they went through 150 goat food pretty quickly. The hophares devoured 50 hophare food almost the same time the goats finished theirs. This makes it seem as though I could end up spending a lot of game time trying to gather the materials and refilling the feeding dishes. So the question first, is anyone else having a problem with doing so? I know from Youtube at least one other player has every kind of animal that can be tamed and brought in. Is it a problem? The suggestion (for developers) is that the feeding dishes could stay full as if the NPC's were taking care of that. After all, there are hunters and farmers that should supposedly be doing something. What do other people have to say? For now, I'll hold off on getting other animals until I'm sure I can manage.

Oh, I'll add in that I am finding these new updates FANTASTIC! Loving it, so thanks again to the developers! Hoping you can keep up.

I am pretty sure your tamed animals will not perish for lack of food. They may not produce or breed, but will not die. So if you forget to fill their food trough now and then (or just leave it empty because you are busy with other things) no worries.

They dont die, as I have goats but no goat feeder or food (& no idea where to get these recipes/blueprints)
Same of Yak - no bait feeder or food
but have quests for both!

The bait recipes are found at the Farmer NPC. The food recipes, beds and feeders unlock once you tame the animals.

I have a cat, dog, 2 yaks, 2 hop hares, 2 white goats, 2 brown goats, 2 fae deer, 2 flightless red tails.

As I've been using my original game save since release, providing the food for them is a non issue for myself as I have stockpile of resources on hand.

For a new players or someone that hasn't been playing that long, it will be on the challenging side too keep up with food for the animals as they haven't had time to build up the resources.

Thanks. That comes closer to my question portion. I've been playing off & on for a while, so had a pretty good size base (fortunately), but didn't expect to be feeding these combinations of food to animals. I suppose I'm lucky in that I have most of what is needed growing inside my base, but it's just the replanting issues for corn, forest beets, and nettle you need, plus the meats, that I wonder about. I don't worry so much about pets/farm animals passing away from lack of food, but I'm pretty sure they'll need to be cared for if you want them to reproduce. Maybe that's a way to keep it slowed down. I've also noticed the animals don't get water dishes at all. I would hope that if it's much of an issue, the developers might consider adding automatic refilling of food dishes and water dishes that refill by means of rainfall, just to keep it a little more real. I'd like to see the animals start reproducing, just to see how that works out, and not have to spend all my time refilling the food dishes just to keep them going. After all, as I said, there are farmers who could be keeping up the planting/harvesting and food production, hunters to gather the meat required, and NPC's who don't have such jobs could supposedly be delivering the food. It's still a great addition, no matter what.

its not even a matter of built up resources. the animals need to eat too frequently.

yeah, they eat way too much.
Think of the food as a production boost. While fed, they pump out resources, you can put food in their bowl while your at base and harvest them every 5 mins or so. Remove the food to a chest when you leave base.

Unfed, they still produce milk/wool but at a much slower rate.
Started a fresh save and decided that feeding pets would require a fair bit of hands on stuff.

One suggestion I'd make is that folk doing the same, waits until they've strengthened the flame and got a spare altar which can get used to take over an existing farm before going too far into the cultivation side. Saves a lot of rake work and the starting area has a decent open grassland for "grazing" barns and fences even if they don't actually eat the grass.
@MrFibble That is actually a great suggestion; some kind of pasture flower/grass that we could plant on open plains (like we can with bushes) and once planted the animals would 'eat' the plants slowly over time -taking away one plant every so often- until we had to plant the field again.\

So we could fence in an area, overplant it with this a grass/flower and let them eat away; no field preparation needed and just have to replant every now and then.

I say take that over to their suggestion site and add it.

I discovered the farm Wistful Fields located directly north of the Low Meadows spire, on my second play through a while back. It is now my main base with all saves going forward. It comes with a really nice stone barn (see center of image) and a lot of crop/flower planters. It also has copper, flint on the cliffs just outside the base, and an easy slope down into the shroud to get resources from the shroud. The cliff face to the right, I built a small dungeon for the alchemist and Crowley the Hollow Halls guy.

Harvest homestead, west from springlands spire is another decent option with fields and barns.

Yes, that's a good location too.
But since I'm too lazy to plant so much corn for my animals, I fly every now and then to Harvest Homestead and pick up the corn there = 27 pieces of corn. That's enough for my needs, and I do never ever plant it on my own.

Does the rake do anything? I have never crafted one or maybe I did but have never used it.. I can plant everything in the grass around my base. Do you need it to plant in the sandy biomes maybe?

Its used to terraform. To flatten, round, or raise ground within ur base.
