When you want lower the difficulty: have a look on boss hp and boss damage.

I think it was a mistake on the devs part to actually let him take any damage at all until you've done his gimmick thing.
When I was there the first time I got him to half health having no idea he could get knocked down. My brain just locked into "okay he's taking damage i'm probably underleveled, this'll just take a while."
If it has just said "immune" then I'd probably have started looking looking for a gimmick earlier.
So I used the stun arrows (even as a mage) to make him fall down and then hit him with my eternal acid bite spell.
