Leveling isn't too slow at all, more likely too fast. Don't watch your levels, better watch your progress on the map. This game is about exploration, and when you clear all this caves, castles, villages, scavenger camps and so on, you'll get lot of XP and also the needed crafting mats.
Another good way for leveling up in early game is mining with your pickaxe. Mine some salt, flint, clay, copper, ..and you'll gain XP.
This game is more about exploring the world. And while there are miasma-bounderies you cannot cross without gaining (whatever this is named) levels on your altair, there was plenty to explore for me at any time!
And if you still want to talk about leveling: I don't think it is to slow. For me it is just about right.
Silent Worrior is probably right. Try to obtain skillpoints in alternative ways he described! ;)
I think it's roughly where it needs to be but if I had to choose between a bit too slow and a bit too fast I would agree with you, it's perhaps a bit too fast.
I also think you're right to say that there is no need to focus on levels. That may be why PocketYoda said it was pretty slow for them, and then used the word tedious. If they are chasing levels then that is probably why it feels tedious or slow to them when it really isn't. Levelling and gaining skill points aren't the only metrics to track our progress in this game, and they're arguably not the most important, so looking at what we have cleared, how many outposts (flame altars) we have around the map, how many NPCs we have rescued, and our crafting options are ways to evaluate how far we've progressed since we started the game.
Sorry but this honestly sounds like a you issue, as in you're doing something wrong. Are you just wandering around near your starting area grinding bottom level enemies for xp?
You said you played 4 days of real time which would mean 96 hours of play time. That's not even close to what you have - you're at about 14.5 hours.
The skill tree points aren't too expensive because levelling up isn't the only way to earn skill points.
Again, this sounds like you're doing something wrong, like going somewhere you aren't prepared to handle.
Agreed i figured the same thing.. I think its the skills are so crazy hard to acquire.. 4 skill points for one skill really thats dumb.
I do feel xp is slow in this game, in the start, but at a certain point, with some decent armour and weapons, the game starts to get too fast, before you know it you're grinding lv 25 critters for fun.
The game is really a multiplayer game, made for groups of 3-4. Pairs is ok but 3 probably ideal. With 1-3 farming in main base, crafting etc
Tbh I find solo games boring.
I guess everyone's experience are different. Personally I think that you level too fast! If you follow the quest line you will be level 5 within the hour. However if you try to level be simply killing mobs it will go much slower.
I'm the direct opposite i hate mingling with others.. they annoy me especially in games..
Don't level grind. Levels don't matter. Flame level, gear, food/rest buffs, and skill points matter. Player levels are just there to drip feed your some skill points and make you feel like you're getting something for using up your weapon durability on some fell jerk's skull.
Stamina buffs are all that player levels actually amount to.

The initial choice of investing those skill points is, may I suggest very important, with double jump being a priority.
Also, if it helps as far a gathering salt, as oppose to completing the introductory mission, the following is a good source.
Just north of where one is encouraged to build your first altar is a stretch of shroud. If you go to the cliffs overlooking that shroud on the southern side, you can see a ruined tower, just to the northeast.
That tower is a good source of salt, and the top of it is clear of the shroud; there is also a basic chest there if you want it.
Hope it helps.
