Skybase, the ultimate travel nerfsploit
I cheesed my way to the top of the Pillars of Creation, then I built a gravity defying walkway out over the gap between them. leapfrogging my altars as I went. When I got to the dead center, I started a staircase. Spiraling up like a corkscrew in the sky. You could see it from all over the map. I have no idea how many altars I burned through. Easily 50. If you told me 100 I'd believe it.

Once in a while I'd stam up and launch, see how far I could glide. I had the 2nd best glider and my radius was getting pretty big.

Eventually you get high enough that fog effects stop rendering and the whole map is clear. Tiny, but clear. No more Shroud. You can also see north into the forbidden zone. There is nothing to see. A rectangular red shroud blocks access to a vast white plain with nothing in it.

I was finally about as high as the summits to the NE mountains, the highest point on the map. I still had not ever wandered to the Sun Temple in the far SE corner of the map. I saw a Youtube video,so I knew what was at the top. I could see it, miles away and miles below, the furthest corner of the map.

I stammed up. I launched. I flew. I landed on top of the Sun Temple. I looted the chest there. No spoilers, but if you've gotten that far you know what was in there.

I was high enough to glide to every part of the map.

So I'm building my base up there. My days of running around are over. I'll be flying from now on.

This pic was snapped at the end of day one. It got much higher, but the corkscrew reset on reboot so it's gone now.

I haven't found any "regular" spot on the map i could glide off far enough to run out of stamina (fully leveled, but still not the legendary glider) and indeed already thought about it, how far on the map you may be able to glide if you have a high enough starting point.

However i didn't try it, because i dislike absolutely unrealistic buildings like flying bases or sky screws and i knew before, if i could even just fly over half the map it basically would ruin my game experience. Taking away the whole exploring part of the game, making placing flame altars in reasonable spots complete obsolete. Already noticed with the better gliders that gliding even just from the spires is already OP (and i don't even have skilled updraft) and somehow redundant with the fasttravel.

i already showchased this in a thread awhile ago from a skyplattform at the nothern border. which is a better spot longterm due to the map layout.

dont forget better gliders will come in the future and allow you to fly farther and faster.

there is a height build limit where everything turns red and you hit the skybox limit.

yours isnt even that high yet.

example of beeing right next to where the skybox turns red (no build zone you cannot get past)

i didnt build much anymore as they might make it so floating structures break without ground contact in the future.

Someone posted a YT video. Looks cool and all but it is just one of those "I'm glad someone else did it" for me. Not worth my effort.

That is also the reason, why all demanders of "let our base attack and raid from npc like in Valheim and Co." have no clue of this voxel based game ... how could npcs successfully attack a sky fortress or a dungeon underground base?

Good use of your glider, but if I did this myself i'd just ruin my immersion something fierce. As others said, i'm glad someone else did it, not me. I'd just want to reset my world looking at that fugly thing every time I play, lol.

I also made a sky temple doing what you did in this game.
Then decided to move my entire base (including my massive garden) into the sky

I did the same thing on my first playthrough and it ended up ruining the game for me. Got all the best gear early cheesing around to known locations and then.... stopped.

not a reason to necro a 1 year old thread. useing guides kills fixed open world games. what a suprise. true for all of these.
Old thread, but sounds cool. Not something I would personally do, though I have been known to use alters and stairs to scale up the sides of cliffs that I didn't know of a better way to get around. Hoping to do the same with that terrible Ewok Spire someday (see the thread on jumping puzzles for my take on such things).

Aw man, I wish I could get that high!

What's the point of flying everywhere? This game is all about exploration, you can only explore EVERYTHING on foot. It's convenient to fly to specific places you need, but you can only explore everything on foot...

It's exploring on the first run. It's commuting every time after that. If you could fly to work every day, you would.
If the game didn't want us to fly, then why make the Spire spawns so high?

Given there are several spires and up to 10 bases, though me and friends did a flying base just a little lower than the flying castle, we end up most of the time using other well places altars or spires rather than wasting hours flying ( even with the legendary glider ).

But having a flying castle is cool.
