Joining Player behind Carrier-Gate NAT
Hello everyone,

yesterday some friends of mine tried to join my world...unsuccessful. They were stuck in the loading screen and got a timeout after a while.

I'm stuck behind a CGNAT from my ISP so no public IPv4. Could this be the problem? Anyone else got the same issue?

Yep. You having CG-NAT will prevent people from being able to join you because your public IP is not your actual public IP, and you cannot forward on the ISP's side.

People will run into a similar issue with DS-Lite as they have no local IPv4 address.

If you use a good VPN it may alleviate the issue, but with the caveat that your buddies are going to have a good bit more latency on the network connection to your client.

Had to look up CGNAT and... Dayum, that's a thing? Like why?

IPV4 addresses are running out and not everyone can have a public one, so ISPs instead of doing the right thing and updating to IPV6, do the cheap thing and put everyone behind a bigass router.

To add to this...

We have known that this would happen for over 20 years. IPv6 was the solution for running out of IPv4 addresses, and it has existed for almost 20 years now.

Software companies and game developers should be well aware of these limitations, and developing their software to utilize IPv6. However almost no one has done so.
And here we are at the critical stage where not everyone can have an IPv4 address, and those people are just screwed because there wasn't any money in developing for IPv6.

IMHO the situation will just get worse until the problem becomes widespread enough that it starts affecting their bottom line.

I've tried to put the traffic through a vps, which I use with wireguard to reach my Homelab, but without success so far. But I'll take a look into it more deeply maybe it will work one day. Else I have to hope for IPv6 support.

Aye, my country passed a law nearly 10 years ago that ISPs should be fully using IPV6 by 2020, so we're all up-to-date here, but it doesn't really matter when most software still insists in using IPV4.
