Fast Travel?
I saw YouTube review that really made this game look interesting, but the reviewer said there were no mounts & no fast travel points. That worried me because it would really limit how much exploring you could do, but then I saw a post in this forum that said that you can always fast travel to anyplace that you have already been. Is that true? Can I always get back to my base, or go from my base to the last farthest point I had reached?:brothersword::dos2dagger::tank:

There are fast travel points in the game but you have to unlock them first and you can also place down flame altars and use them as fast travel points as well so yes you can always fast travel back to your base since it requires one of those and to whereever you have placed another flame altar.

It's a little awkward but leveling your home base (in my case) flame altar allows you to build more flame altars that each act as fast travel points.

My first altar is level 3 (if I remember) and allows me to place 5 (?) additional altars as I move around the world.

I fast travel to the closest fixed FT point (tower) then move out from there. When I think I might need to stop for a bit (say, near my objective) I place a flame altar that acts as both a re-spawn (in case I die) and FT point.

Again, it feels a little clunky to me, but I try to make sure I always have 5 stone for a flame altar in my inventory, and only 4 of 5 "extra" altars active at a time. That way I can always build one, save, rest, fast travel to my home base, etc without having to walk and climb a thousand miles when my pickaxe breaks : )

That's how I do it. Maybe I'm doing it wrong tho. But it works.

I should add: I'd guess they do it like this under the assumption that players are going to slowly explore. leaving flame altars as they move farther from home, as they slowly upgrade their home base altar thus allowing a slow march across the map leaving FT points as they go.

I just want to travel light and fast so I'm using altars more like temporary campsites as I see the world.

So you craft flame altars? Can you pick them up and reuse them, or are they permanent once you set them? How many can you have going at one time?:WOTHGrayWolf:

They only cost 5 stone to craft. The max number of altars you can place down currently with max upgrades is 8. You can extinguish (destroy) them and place another elsewhere.

At end of current game you can have max 8 at the same time.
You cannot reuse them but extinguish the ones wich aren't usefully anymore.
5 stones are cheap, only in the dessert it's not easy to find them.

I would also like to point out something that I do not believe was covered in the above posts. You cannot "always" fast travel to unlocked fast travel locations. If you're currently Enshrouded, aka inside the massive fog banks littering the map, you are unable to fast travel. You must be in a clear zone to be able to travel.

Yes. You can craft them without the need for a crafting table or anything special. You just need the 5 stone in your inventory.

In one of the menus (can't remember which) it'll tell you how many you can make and how many are active.

I build one when I need to then FT to one I no longer need, "extinguish the flame" (removing it) then FT back to my latest one, move farther, build a new one, "extinguish" an old one, etc, etc.

Again, a bit clunky, but it works.

Excellent point. Yes! Forgot to mention that BIG, little bit of info : )

Oh! I should also mention that it's a good idea to leave a few in places on the map that you think you might want to come back to later on -- say, near areas where you stopped exploring but are pretty sure you'll be coming back to for a quest or something.

It's been mentioned, but I definitely agree with the "always keep one free flame altar slot open" idea. Not only is it a way to create a quick fast travel portal back home to repair/restock/drop off goods, but it also makes it a lot easier to get up a cliff if you plop down a flame altar (so you can build stairs/block towers to get up the incline, etc.), without having to spend forever with a pickaxe digging your way up. I always keep a flame altar in my inventory for this reason. I've also learned (the hard way, on multiple occasions), to always plop down an altar before swaggering into an unknown stretch of shroud. I've face-planted into red shroud more than once while gliding around.

"... always plop down an altar before swaggering into an unknown stretch of shroud. I've face-planted into red shroud more than once while gliding around."

So true. I'd guess many a happy-go-lucky gliding enthusiast has seen the clouds part and that red shroud coming up fast, and thought "Ohhhh. This was a bad idea." : )

And great point about the cliffs, digging, and building. Even if only temporary, anything build within range of a flame shrine will persist until that flame is extinguished, so tunnels and bridges or, say, purpose-build high platforms for gliding extra long distances will stay around until you don't need them anymore.
