Dumb question? Is parry just blocking with melee without a shield?

Tbh it changes so much between games that I no longer know what they means to parry in games automatically. In my mind you can only parry with a melee weapon, but since I can't find a keybinding for it (unless I managed to overlook it) yet see it in the skill options to increase it... does it only work if you block/parry with a melee weapon without using a shield? Considering many games combine blocking and parry...

You have to block when the enemy's weapon turns blue, that will parry the attack. Keep in mind some attacks can not be parried and some attacks (animals) don't glow blue.
