False. The red stuff is not lava but some sort of fungi grown over all the places where water was.
Not as terrifying? It's literally the only thing that at the end was still able to kill me. Especially annoying when it is right below the ground in some places, triggering the effect without you being able to even see it. And in most other spots it is at steep hills where you can just "slide" into it without being able to jump out again in time - since you just don't have that once you touch it, even just briefly. It pretty much immediately drains your shroud meter to 0.
